Fancy some downtime exploring rural Suffolk? The tree-shaded pitches at Hill Farm are in a peaceful setting near the historic town of Saxmundham, handily accessible from the A12 and close to Suffolk’s popular coastline. This is a site that welcomes families and groups of friends – and it's wonderfully dog-friendly too (there’s a five-acre woodland to the north of the site that's great for dog walking). The site has good TV reception for relaxing indoors on damp or chilly days. Gas-powered barbecues are allowed too (no ground or silver barbecues please), so you can keep warm and toasty while grilling up a barbecue feast. A pub in Darsham village is a five-minute drive away (or half an hour's walk along a farm track through the fields). The nearest shop is at the local petrol station, a few minutes' drive away (near to the Darsham train station). There's also a good local bakery a few minutes' drive away along the A12. The popular village of Westleton (10 minutes’ drive) has village stores, a farm shop, a garage and an art gallery. Back on site, there are several toilet blocks with hot running water, plus four showers. There is also a washing machine, grey waste and chemical toilet disposal and recycling.

Ik was blij met: Nice friendly owner, really liked the pitches which were secluded, also the woodland surroundings which made the site feel like a Spanish campsite. Good dog walking route. Nearby bakery is excellent and serves sourdough pizza on Friday evenings.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Showers and washing facilities were a bit quirky, but not a problem they were perfectly adequate for our needs.

Ik was blij met: Trees edging the site with small bushes separating some of the CL pitches where we were. Toilets and showers were clean and modern fittings. Only adverse comment is that the shower in the shed assembly , theoperation had multiple instructions, including coin operated but 20p pieces were left on the shelf, but it only gave 3 minutes Worth of hot water which is not long enough if you want to wash you hair as well.otherwise it required £1 coin for 10mins. Shower and light pull cords were outside the shower cubicle, but inside the shed building . The shower in the metal cabin had the controls on the outside of container. I didn’t use that one!

Ik was niet zo blij met: The unisex toilet and shower container was not satisfactory in that the changing compartment required stepping out of shower cubicle into changing part, with no screening from the main door into the toilets, which was for male and female.

Ik was blij met: Quiet site. Friendly campers. Roomy, clean facilities. Great location to visit Walberswick, Thorpeness and Aldeburgh- all stunning. Good price. Roomy level pitches. Lovely large picnic bench, this meant we could cook and eat outside of the van in hot weather. Don’t let the external appearance of the facilities fool you, they are not plush but well maintained, roomy and clean.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Hills Farm is an great base for exploring the Suffolk coastline, with indie boutiques in cobbled streets and restaurants on the pier in the cute seaside town of Southwold (15 minutes’ drive), and an extensive sandy beach backed by dunes at Walberswick (10 minutes). Aldeburgh (20 minutes) is home to famous literary and music festivals, plus bracing strolls on the pebble beach and a renowned fish and chip shop. There’s plenty of history in these parts too, with stately part-medieval Orford Castle (25 minutes) open for tours of its angular keep, and you can follow a spectacular walk around the walls at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). The star of the show here, however, might just be the Anglo-Saxon burial ground and museum showcasing its priceless, golden finds at Sutton Hoo (half an hour). Getting out and about in glorious and unspoilt countryside is easy too, with boardwalks crossing the heathland at National Trust-owned Dunwich Heath and Beach (15 minutes). At the famous RSPB Minsmere coastal reserve (20 minutes), you have the chance to spot otters in reedbed pools, with rare bitterns and avocets nesting nearby.
