If you fancy a nose around Norfolk combined with a touch of luxury, sound out The Fire Pit Camp near the pretty market town of Dereham. This small, family-run glamping site offers a variety of stays under canvas and wood, all pre-erected and ready and waiting so you can get down to the serious business of holidaying from the moment you arrive on site. It’s easy to stay busy here, with a football field for running around on with family and friends, and a games room with pool table for older kids. You can also book yoga sessions once on site – please bring your own equipment and get down to some holistic exercise in the designated Yoga Yurt. The site owners are striving to be as inclusive and sustainable as possible, so please note the glamping pods are off-grid or powered by solar energy. Facilities in the Camping Meadow include a firepit for cosying up around and grilling up a barbecue, and a communal kitchen area for simple meals and washing up. Don’t want to bother with cooking on your holiday? Just head for the Warehouse Bar and the takeaway Neapolitan pizza service on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Take the kids drag racing at Swaffham Raceway (all 15 minutes’ drive) or explore the countryside on four legs from Kimblewick Equestrian Centre (10 minutes). Water-bound adventures are on offer as well. Go sailing on the Norfolk Broads (40 minutes), head to the coast for bracing walks on the dunes along the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounding Wells-next-the-Sea (35 minutes), or try to spot the grey seal colony at National Trust - Blakeney National Nature Reserve (45 minutes). Away from the water, jump on the North Norfolk Railway steam train at Sheringham (50 minutes), or tour Jacobean apartments and explore 55 acres of gardens at National Trust - Blickling Hall (40 minutes), once home to Anne Boleyn. Art lovers can indulge themselves with ancient art and contemporary installations at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (half an hour).
