Entertaining the idea of a cross-border break? For comfy hols on the England–Wales border, look no further than Foxtail Holiday Park, a modern site a couple of minutes' walk from the Llangollen Canal. Even savvy locals would be forgiven for being outfoxed by the geography around here, as this green agricultural landscape straddles the border in ways that make it difficult to keep up with which country you're in (any Cymraeg on the road signs is often a helpful clue). And letting yourself lose your bearings isn't without appeal in this part of the world – crisscross the surrounding terrain along the Llangollen Canal or Offa's Dyke Path if you fancy days of rambling (both are clearly signposted, so there's little chance of getting properly lost). Back at base, this well-kept park has an array of attractive all-weather pitches where you can settle down and relax after days of adventuring. Toilets, showers, disabled facilities, drainage points for tourers and free superfast wifi are all mightily handy to have. The on-site bar is open from 3pm on Fridays and Saturdays when you want to unwind or have a social drink, while fuss-free dinners can be fixed at the traditional inn five minutes' walk down the road. Foxtail Holiday Park also has the plus of being dog-friendly. Need a supermarket, leisure centre or takeaway? Oswestry and Wrexham are both within 15 minutes' drive.

Ik was blij met: Lovely clean site, friendly staff. Toilets and showers were very clean. There's a clubhouse on site which serves pizzas and burgers. There's a canal walk which takes you over the aqueduct and into Chirk. There is also a couple of pubs within walking distance serving food.

Ik was niet zo blij met: There was nothing we disliked about the site.

Ik was blij met: Welcoming staff, great prices at the bar, good free WiFi, even made space for a friend that had been let down on another site, the photos on the website do not do the showers justice.

Ik was blij met: Site was very clean, well laid out, facilities were top notch, hosts were very friendly and helpful. Great addition to have a bar on site. Good WiFi strong enough to stream TV.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Only negative is there can be a bit of road noise from the A5

Ik was blij met: Very very hel-ful and welcoming team who went out of their way to make sure everything was ok. Everywhere very clean

Ik was niet zo blij met: Lot of builders debris left near the pot washing room. Not fault of staff - builders had not cleaned up after themselves, Showers had no hooks to hang clothes or shelves/ seat to keep shoes etc off the wet floor. Bit annoying trying to juggle and balance clothes and towels on top of the door. But everything was spotlessly clean.

Ik was blij met: Lovely clean site. Facilities are spotless. Manager very friendly and knowledgeable about local area. There is a garden centre and a pub nearby. Plenty to see and do in the area including Chirk Castle

Ik was blij met: We found the site to be very clean and tidy with plenty of room for car and van / All fully serviced. The staff were very helpful and polite we will certainly use this site again.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Ladies and gents wash rooms need somewhere to hang coats when using them.

Ik was blij met: EVERYTHING. Amazing site, lovely warm welcome, great spacious pitches, modern clean facilities. Site is in a brilliant location just perfect for flat walks along the canal. Lovely reasonably priced bar on site, poachers pub across the road does excellent food, booking a table is recommended. Yes you do get some road noise but didn't bother us at all. We will definitely be returning. WiFi speed excellent.

Ik was niet zo blij met: No pot washing facilities and would of liked an enclosed dog area but you can't have everything you want.

Ik was blij met: Absolutely loved our 3 days at foxtail. Well maintained site, clean facilities. The club house was amazing. Staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Great pitches well maintained. Will definitely be back. Location is excellent. Bus stop 5 minutes away from site.

In approximately half a mile, take the first turning on the right, immediately after the garden centre. White caravans signs are located on the grass verge. If you pass the Poachers Pub, you have driven too far past the site entrance.

Those with courage left to spare can abseil, walk through gorges or clamber over rocks at the place's couple of outdoor activity centres; there's also scope for more relaxing rides aboard a volunteer-run heritage railway and horse-drawn jaunts in a restored barge. The ancient town of Chester (30 minutes) is also close if you're up for a change of scene – with museums, Roman remains and one of the finest zoos in all of England, there's a lot here to please any curious kids you've brought along. Additional hands-on activities can be sorted with a trip to Wrexham's Xplore Science Discovery Centre (15 minutes), where live science demos should put a sparkle in any budding boffin's eye.
