Foxtail Holiday Park: Spacious

General

  • Modern holiday park on the border between England and Wales
  • Oswestry and Wrexham within 15 minutes' drive; Chester 30 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with all-weather pitches; pub five minutes' walk

Entertaining the idea of a cross-border break? For comfy hols on the England–Wales border, look no further than Foxtail Holiday Park, a modern site a couple of minutes' walk from the Llangollen Canal.

Even savvy locals would be forgiven for being outfoxed by the geography around here, as this green agricultural landscape straddles the border in ways that make it difficult to keep up with which country you're in (any Cymraeg on the road signs is often a helpful clue).

And letting yourself lose your bearings isn't without appeal in this part of the world – crisscross the surrounding terrain along the Llangollen Canal or Offa's Dyke Path if you fancy days of rambling (both are clearly signposted, so there's little chance of getting properly lost).

Back at base, this well-kept park has an array of attractive all-weather pitches where you can settle down and relax after days of adventuring. Toilets, showers, disabled facilities, drainage points for tourers and free superfast wifi are all mightily handy to have, while fuss-free dinners can be fixed at the traditional inn five minutes' walk down the road. Foxtail Holiday Park also has the plus of being dog-friendly (as is the pub, for that matter). Need a supermarket, leisure centre or takeaway? Oswestry and Wrexham are both within 15 minutes' drive.

Please note

The swimming pool is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site was excellent and has not yet been fully completed (indoor pool not complete and closed due to COVID) but when it has would imagine it would be even better. Prime location to village and canal walks, lovely owner very friendly made to feel like nothing is too much trouble. Wi-Fi access best I have every had whilst camping, super fast and free!!!

    Disliked:

Only issue was traffic noise on A5 that runs alongside site but nothing that can be done about that unfortunately site welcome and facilities make up for this.

Clean site, with immaculate facilities - really friendly owner, lovely to have a hallowen competition and chippy van onsite for tea! Great location for walks in the area.

    Disliked:

I feel awful for saying this, because there’s probably not much that can be done - but the road is noisy and it kept me awake most nights of our stay.

We stayed for the weekend, due to traffic we arrived late. We telephoned ahead and was told not too rush as Steve would still be onsite. When we did finally arrive was welcomed and shown to our pitch.
Lovely friendly park which is emaculate !!! Shower and toilet block is modern and very clean, which is also heated...
When reading other reviews was a bit worried about traffic noise, but wasn't that bad really.
I think the site would benefit from a shop onsite, or maybe selling basic goods from reception

Thanks for a quite relaxing weekend

The park is really clean and well maintained. Great sized fully serviced pitches which easily accommodate larger touring caravans and motorhomes. The site staff are lovely and are very welcoming and helpful. The swimming pool, lodges and pods are currently being built. The site will be a lovely size when it is completed. The site is a great location, with the canal, Chirk town, restuarants, pubs, Sainsbury's, Dobbies garden centre and a BP fuel station all within walking distance.

Site immaculately clean and fantastic facilities. Swimming pool not open yet so can’t comment on. Drive over grey and toilet waste an added bonus too.pitches were very level so no need to use chocks. The wardens were also extremely welcoming.

    Disliked:

The noise, bordered on both sides by extremely busy and very noisy roads. The noise doesn’t reduce at night either, it was still noisy in the small hours. We also experienced air traffic noise too.

Local attractions

Longing for the outdoor life? Rafters can hire a craft and splash their way down the rapids at Llangollen (15 minutes' drive), a pretty village in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains. Those with courage left to spare can abseil, walk through gorges or clamber over rocks at the place's couple of outdoor activity centres; there's also scope for more relaxing rides aboard a volunteer-run heritage railway and horse-drawn jaunts in a restored barge.

The ancient town of Chester (30 minutes) is also close if you're up for a change of scene – with museums, Roman remains and one of the finest zoos in all of England, there's a lot here to please any curious kids you've brought along. Additional hands-on activities can be sorted with a trip to Wrexham's Xplore Science Discovery Centre (15 minutes), where live science demos should put a sparkle in any budding boffin's eye.

Other likeable local spots include engineering triumphs such as Chirk Aqueduct (20 minutes' walk) and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes' drive) or historic houses like Chirk Castle (10 minutes) and Plas Newydd (15 minutes).
