When touring in Shropshire, there are a few places you've got to tick off along the way – Ironbridge Gorge, the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Shrewsbury, the county town, are all sure to be on the list. That's where Wrekin View Retreat comes in – this smashing little spot is within easy reach of all the local sights and, as its name suggests, is just a short distance from The Wrekin, an impressive hill a few minutes' drive from base that makes a great hike. This spot is very quiet, hosting just a handful of guests at any one time. With private access, secure grounds and a peaceful environment, it makes an appealing proposition for those that like their holidays on the low-key side. It's very laidback too, with dogs, barbecues and campfires all allowed (just use your common sense and follow all instructions from site staff). The facilities here are simple but well-maintained, with toilets, a wash basin and a well-maintained rustic shower for guests who haven't brought their own amenities. Please note that the only waste disposal available is for dog waste – please take all litter home with you. Wrekin View Retreat is in the small village of Walcot, just a few minutes' walk from a local pub and a short pedal from scenic National Cycle Route 81.

Ik was blij met: We loved our mini break at Wrekin View, Kate was so welcoming and the site is just gorgeous, great facilities including that wonderful shower (if you know, you know!) and SO peaceful with the most lovely views of the river from our tent too. Our dogs had a fab time running in the paddock and sitting round the campfire. We will definitely be back again soon and hopefully for a bit longer! Keep doing what you do best Kate, Wrekin View is a wonderful old school gem of a site 💚

Ik was blij met: The most amazing 2 night stay at this beautiful setting overlooking the river. Quiet and peaceful with loads of room and a very warm welcome from Kate. Nothing was too much trouble for her. The shower was so quirky, great fun, don’t want to say too much and spoil the surprise as people need to experience it for themselves. I loved it!!!!! Definitely recommend this idyllic place.

Ik was blij met: Such a quiet little site. Plenty of space to walk the dogs, clean facilities such as toilet, shower and washing up sink.

Ik was blij met: Peaceful site with stunning views and a warm welcome from Kate who took the time to show us around.

There were power hookup cables already in situ, which made setting up just that little bit easier.

It was a one night stop over for us, but this site has been added to our favourite list.

Weir View staanplaats voor camper op grind , met elektriciteit

Ik was blij met: The view over the weir was simply gorgeous, and I was in the right place to take in the most beautiful sunset on Friday night. I couldn't have asked for a better location - stunning!!

I showered in the stable, which was quirky, hot, and just brilliant. There were paddocks for my dog to run free and a little walk around the site, so he was very happy, and I slept so well with the sound of the weir helping me drift off.

The aim of this weekend was to get quite a bit of work done - that was the 'pain'. The 'pleasure' was the stay which outweighed the pain 10-fold. The work just flowed without it feeling like work (excellent wifi btw), and that's all down to being in such beautiful surroundings! I even had more than enough time to sit, listen to the birds, watch the herons, take in the beauty, and do nothing.

Thank you to Kate, who was a great host. I'm so sorry this retreat is only carrying on a few more months because it really is a slice of heaven!!

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The Wrekin can be seen from all around here and can be reached by car in about 10 minutes. There are paths up both sides of the hill, with one that's gentler on the knees and another rougher route for those that appreciate a good challenge. There are plenty more climbs, rambles and cycle rides on offer if you head 20 minutes or so to the south to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Church Stretton (30 minutes) is always a good place to start. To the east is Telford (15 minutes) and Ironbridge (20 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a proud industrial past. As well as the Iron Bridge itself, this scenic stretch of the Severn is home to sights as varied as Buildwas Abbey (20 minutes), museums dedicated to tiles and china (20 minutes) and Benthall Hall (25 minutes), a National Trust property. In the other direction, you have Shrewsbury town centre (15 minutes), where boat trips, history walks and independent shops are on offer. Alternatively, on the outskirts of town there are historic sites like Wroxeter Roman City (10 minutes), Attingham Park (10 minutes), a stately home with gorgeous grounds, and Haughmond Abbey (15 minutes).
