To wander about or relax first? You might find that a leisurely walk is just as peaceful as kicking back on site here, as Tranquil Hill is a rather scenic hilltop spot with plenty of trails nearby that you can follow to your heart’s content. A 25-minute drive from Ironbridge Gorge and half an hour from Shrewsbury, there's also lots to do in the way of wandering around open-air museums or cruising down the river Severn. There are often spectacular evening sunsets here, with views that are just as special by day – the site overlooks Shropshire, Wenlock Edge and The Wrekin. The site is family-run and peaceful, so it’s a friendly place to retreat to – pets are welcome too, and if you have any requests, the site will do their best to meet your needs wherever possible. Facilities on site are pretty simple – this is wild camping, after all, so there’s no running water, but that means all the more time to spend over a barbecue or campfire (both are permitted on site). You may want to hunt down your favourite bits for the grill. If so, there are a couple of small food shops within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. When you’d rather put back some tasty bites from a merry spot nearby, there are also a few pubs within 10 minutes’ drive.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

For messing about on the water, the river Severn is about a quarter of an hour's drive from base. Watersports like canoeing, paddleboarding and kayaking are on offer here, or you can simply wander along riverside walks in search of a picnic spot in peaceful green surrounds. There are lots of historic attractions in the local area too, with highlights including National Trust-managed Attingham Park (20 minutes), an ornate 18th-century estate, and Ironbridge Gorge (25 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with museums about the area's industrial heritage. Open-air attractions aren't in short supply either: there's Blists Hill Victorian Town close to Ironbridge if you want to experience 19th century life, while Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (25 minutes) can fill you in on rural history with its hands-on activities. A visit to Shropshire's county town of Shrewsbury (half an hour) is another must – the castle, riverboat cruises and walks through the town's riverfront parks all make for a very agreeable day out. Similar simple pleasures await in Ludlow (40 minutes), where there's also a castle, riverside trails and historic bridges to investigate.
