Now here's something a little bit different – head to YHA Clun Mill and you'll be staying in the grounds of a restored historic watermill. This place has buckets of character – it's all exposed beams and stripped timber floors, and some of the old machinery is still in place. The quiet, rural site is half a mile from Clun town and in the centre of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so get ready to be wowed by your surroundings too. The area is popular with hikers and cyclists, who use the hostel as a base to walk or ride around the Shropshire Hills and its pretty market towns. Hill forts, castles and other historic highlights are also easily reachable from here; for urban days, Craven Arms is within 20 minutes’ drive and the larger Shrewsbury is 55 minutes away, while Hereford – with its impressive cathedral – is just over an hour to the south. Closer to home is the town of Clun, a small but perfectly formed place with a couple of pubs and a well-equipped supermarket if you don’t want to stray too far from the peaceful site for provisions. Guests can cook and wash up at the indoor kitchen on site, and there's also a barbecue pit for alfresco dining during the warmer months. Shower, toilet and laundry facilities are also available, along with a bike store and car parking behind the hostel. For those trundling in by train, Craven Arms station is five miles from the site.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Whether on foot or bike, you won’t tire of the views surrounding your rural retreat – it’s called an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for a reason, you know. Particularly fine scenes of Shropshire countryside can be seen at Offa’s Dyke, the Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley, and a 10-minute walk will get you to the ruins of Clun Castle. For those really going the distance, YHA Clun Mill is also close to the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycling route. Jump in the car and in 15 minutes you can experience how the Victorians farmed at the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, or head to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (also 15 minutes) to explore the exhibition, riverside walks and regular family events. For astronomy buffs, The Spaceguard Centre (with a working observatory) is about 25 minutes away. The towns of Craven Arms (a 20-minute drive) and Ludlow (half an hour) have a fine selection of shops and eateries – and if you’ve come for the castles you can take your pick from Stokesay Castle, Ludlow Castle, Hopton Castle and Richard’s Castle.
