Grab the dog (if you've got one – no need to acquire one specially) and head to Cresslands Touring Park in South Lincolnshire for woodland walks and lazy days near the River Glen. A good base for exploring the surroundings and enjoying a bit of outdoor time, the park is five minutes from a peaceful woodland, for long walks and spotting wildlife (including the kingfishers which live along this stretch of the glen). Guests can also head to the nearby river for walks, or take bikes out onto quiet countryside lanes. Not got a mutt? The site's also welcoming to cats, rabbits… even kids. Whoever's in your party, head to the opposite riverbank for a popular walking spot leading to the nature reserve along the Macmillan Way, a long-distance footpath linking Boston in Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury in Dorset. After all that fresh air you won’t have to venture far for a drink and a bite to eat – Waterside Garden Centre is 500 metres away with a restaurant, and there are a few pubs around a mile away if you fancy some pub grub. Cresslands is four miles south of Bourne, which has a greater selection of eateries, and the historic town of Stamford, with its attractions such as the famed Burghley House and Park and open-air theatre, is about a 25-minute drive. Bathroom facilities on site include two showers, two toilets and two wash basins with instant hot water and nifty extras including shaver ports and hand dryers. Two washing-up sinks and a washing machine are also available.

Ik was blij met: The owner David developed the site with huge care for Mother Nature and using feng shui principles to bring harmony. Despite flooding deluging the site in January he has worked hard to make the whole site beautiful. The privacy between each pitch is much appreciated helped by the careful laurel plantings. Great to separate the doggies barking at each other too. David also works with wood and you can buy his beautiful products. The greeting on arrival was warm and welcoming. The walks around the site are lovely with a kingfisher hide (sadly I didn’t see it) I also took the longer walk across the bridge where my dog could run free off the lead. The toilets, showers and dish washing facilities were clean and not far from the pitches. Highly recommended.

Ik was niet zo blij met: The only issue with this site and obviously not the owners fault was the very busy and noisy road nearby. The owner had planted noise reducing trees and built fences however despite being deaf in one ear the noise was loud even for me.

Ik was blij met: Pristine campsite and facilities. Well laid out with hedges between pitches for privacy. David the campsite owner was very friendly and told us about the history of the site. Lots of wildlife due to sympathetic development. Liked the wild flower areas. Also a lovely walk the other side of the river. Communal bbqs around the site although we didn’t use them and seating in quiet areas.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Just the one thing we disliked was the road noise from the A15, although you got used to ti after a while.

Ik was blij met: Clean, tidy, well run campsite. We needed to leave early in the morning to do a triathlon, Richard changed the barrier timings and we had no problems exiting early doors. Great experience 10/10!

Go wandering in Bourne Woods, a peaceful and ancient woodland around five minutes away by car, or give your legs a real workout by linking up with the Macmillan Way for 290 miles of footpath crossing the Lincolnshire Fens. Visit Burghley House and Park, a 16th-century country house near Stamford (25 minutes by car), built for Elizabeth I's lucky Lord High Treasurer Lord Burghley. Sights to see include the Great Hall with hammer beam roof, collections of 17th-century Italian paintings, the gorgeous Heaven Room painted by Verrio, and the gardens packed with sculptures, flowers and plants. While in Stamford, pay visits to All Saints Church and the Stamford Arts Centre, home to art galleries and the tourist info centre. You might also stroll around the Stamford meadows for birdwatching or a picnic on the banks of the Welland. Another option in town is All Saints Brewery, for guided tours of the microbrewery and tastings of its specialised fruit beers.
