If you’re up for a stint in a swish safari tent in the South Drenthe countryside, with not much but the sounds of cows, chickens, goats and the occasional tractor to disturb the peace, make a beeline for Camping Emmen and resign yourself to the fact that you might never want to leave its lush natural pool and sandy beach ever again… While it is indeed tricky to tear yourself away from the water here, partaking in one of the traditional pastimes of the Netherlands (pedalling around by bike) is still a must. This site on a quiet road is just a few minutes away from the local village and borders scenic cycle routes like the Saxony. Rent a ride from reception – electric bikes are on offer as well as people-powered contraptions – and ask about the routes to race along. Or, if that sounds way too active, simply lie back at the beach while supervising the kids as they paddle. Younger guests have inflatable toys by the banks of the pool, playground equipment and go-karts to keep them busy, and there’s also a petting zoo on site for ambling with the animals. During days best spent undercover, an indoor space crammed with craft and games is popular with the nippers. But what about amusement for the adults? Whether you want to cast their rod for a day, play a round of golf or bask in a blissful spa, leisure activities are a short drive away.

If you’re on a family foray to South Drenthe, take the kids along to the many playgrounds and indoor play areas in the region, like the Plopsa Indoor Coevorden (10 minutes’ drive), or wander around the Wildlands adventure zoo while sighting animals settled in themed sections designed to mimic their natural habitats (20 minutes). When you’re after something a little more active, get the whole clan together for a cycle ride along a section of the 240-kilometre Saxony bike route, which runs directly past Camping Emmen and wends its way through stunning South Drenthe scenery. Hikers could head off on ambles down the Pieterpad meanwhile, a path stretching from the far north of the Netherlands to the far south. Fancy flitting around a forested area? Escape to Emmerdennen and bound beneath the boughs of the trees or learn about the Netherlands’ wartime history at the highly-rated Ergens in Nederland 1939-1945 museum (both 25 minutes’ drive).
