Whether planning a pitstop in the Gelderland or sticking around for a few days, make your way to Camping Sevink Molen – a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Winterswijk and right on the banks of Hilgelo recreational lake. Energetic days should start by, in or on the water: a sandy beach makes lazing under the Dutch sun easy and afternoon snacks and cooling drinks are to be had at the beach club, while swimming, diving, rowing, surfing, fishing and standup paddleboarding should keep aquatic types busy. Away from the lakeside, kids can get energy out at a host of outdoor playgrounds – including on the jumping pillows, go-karts and sandpits at the largest, which grownups can handily supervise from the terrace – and they'll easily find something to do at the indoor adventure park, where dino digs, trampolines and miniature electric cars all beckon. When kids are after something a little more slow-paced, saunter over to the petting zoo to meet the goats and feed the chickens, or wander along to 19th-century Sevink Mölle (a national monument) to see volunteer millers make the flour that goes into the site’s pancakes. The on-site pancake restaurant has about 100 varieties to try, but if that doesn't appeal, the Bourgondisch grill is on site for other eats.

Once all site activities are tried and tested, take the time to explore the scenic Achterhoek, which the site is located in. The 415-kilometre Noaberpad walking route is within easy reach (10 minutes’ drive away, outside of Winterswijk) for leisurely rambling wanders, and having bike rental on site makes taking part in the Netherlands’ national pastime – cycling – a cinch. Turn next to the nearest town, Winterswijk, for Wednesday-morning and all-day-Saturday markets, a pool with slides, rapids and a Turkish steam bath (with discounts for site guests), and the one-time house of artist Piet Mondrian, which is now a museum and permanent exhibition of his early works. Lots else is nearby too for all sorts of interests: it’s five minutes to Vineyard Hesselink for wine drinkers, 15 minutes to Rosenhaege Living Gardens for green-fingered guests, 20 minutes to National Onderduikmuseum for those interested in World War II, and 15 minutes to Megapret amusement park for kids who need a distraction. If the Netherlands is ceasing to entertain, another option is just next door… It’s a 15-minute drive from base to the border with Germany and plenty is visitable once on the other side, including the city of Bocholt (half an hour away), the Bahia Erlebnisbad indoor waterpark (25 minutes), and the wolves, bisons and peacocks at wildlife park Biotopwildpark Anholter Schweiz (35 minutes).
