Once all site activities are tried and tested, take the time to explore the scenic Achterhoek, which the site is located in. The 415-kilometre Noaberpad walking route is within easy reach (10 minutes’ drive away, outside of Winterswijk) for leisurely rambling wanders, and having bike rental on site makes taking part in the Netherlands’ national pastime – cycling – a cinch. Turn next to the nearest town, Winterswijk, for Wednesday-morning and all-day-Saturday markets, a pool with slides, rapids and a Turkish steam bath (with discounts for site guests), and the one-time house of artist Piet Mondrian, which is now a museum and permanent exhibition of his early works. Lots else is nearby too for all sorts of interests: it’s five minutes to Vineyard Hesselink for wine drinkers, 15 minutes to Rosenhaege Living Gardens for green-fingered guests, 20 minutes to National Onderduikmuseum for those interested in World War II, and 15 minutes to Megapret amusement park for kids who need a distraction. If the Netherlands is ceasing to entertain, another option is just next door… It’s a 15-minute drive from base to the border with Germany and plenty is visitable once on the other side, including the city of Bocholt (half an hour away), the Bahia Erlebnisbad indoor waterpark (25 minutes), and the wolves, bisons and peacocks at wildlife park Biotopwildpark Anholter Schweiz (35 minutes).
