A safari tent? On a site that’s been carefully designed to be safe and secure for junior guests – and with loads of stuff to do for all ages? Get along to Gelderland glamping at Vodatent at Recreatiepark de Wrange, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Doetinchem.
Much care has been taken here to ensure the site is as safe as possible for younger guests: cars are kept in the car park to allow for plenty of traffic-free space to play, and the open-air swimming pool and paddling pool have been fenced off to avoid accidental stumbles into the water. Kids are kept well entertained apart from play and pool too, as there’s a summer activities programme to get stuck into and a sizeable playground to whirl around. Miniature golf, a pétanque court and table tennis are also on site.
Kid concerns may not extend to the convenience of the site for those who are doing the packing and cooking, but Recreatiepark de Wrange has that covered as well: safari tents are all set up with much of what you’ll need, including comfy beds, a dining table and a well-equipped mobile kitchen that can be positioned on your deck for fine days or wheeled inside if you’d rather stay under cover. Not touching a frying pan while on hol, ta very much? Stroll over to the brasserie for snacks or full meals to eat in or take back to your terrace.
Off site, walks and bike routes aplenty meander around this part of Gelderland – look out for deer, wild boar and birds as you go, and perhaps you’ll get a glimpse of the badgers after which the site is named…?

Set off by bike or foot into the peaceful site surrounds, or take to the car for destinations such as museums, national parks and animal parks further afield.
Kids welded to their consoles? Take them (kids, not consoles) for a day at Het Land van Jan Klaassen (15 minutes), a theme and amusement park billed as having ‘old-fashioned games for ages up to eight’ and home to the biggest puppet theatre in the Netherlands. The park also has a castle, a min train, a mirror maze and a rope bridge… and yes, there’s ice cream for sale too.
Those hikes and bike rides are most plentiful in De Hoge Veluwe National Park and Veluwezoom National Park, each half an hour away; if you’d like to stick to cultural attractions, the Netherlands Open Air Museum is also 30 minutes from the site, Middachten Castle and Gardens is 35 minutes and the Kröller-Müller art museum and sculpture park is 50 minutes away.
