You know those days when you just want to race straight from your tent to the beach and dive into the water for a swim? (And you’re not going to let a piffling problem like being in a landlocked country stop you…) Those sorts of days are well spent at Kemp Stříbrný Rybník, right on the banks of seven-hectare Stříbrný Rybník lake. The safari tents here have fab views out over the water, and none are more than a couple of minutes’ stroll from the sandy beach area for swimming, paddling and fishing. If you’ve brought restless small sorts with you, there’s plenty to keep them busy while the grownups settle in for serious relaxation: beach volleyball, badminton, pétanque, table tennis, a giant air trampoline and a whopping 60-metre-long waterslide among the amusements. A beach-side restaurant provides sustenance for all these antics, and a semi-shaded terrace on which to consume snacks and drinks. Should you fancy venturing a little further, a 10-kilometre paved path leads out into the surrounding Orlice Nature Park and there are bikes, scooters and skates for hire to aid exploration. For something a bit more pulse-raising, head next door to the Hradec Králové activity park for treetop rope courses, a climbing wall, archery and watersports.

There’s no need to stray too far from site for a bit of excitement – the activity park right next door has several treetop trails along with archery, miniature golf, paintballing and heaps more to keep the nippers amused (and the grownups, for that matter). Quieter times are on hand too, with some lovely hikes in the neighbouring nature park. Hradec Králové, 10 minutes’ drive away, is worth a wander to see its cathedral, climb the White Tower and visit its museums and galleries – the modern art museum and Museum of East Bohemia both come highly recommended, as does a visit to the Petrof piano factory and museum for musical types. Also within a half-hour drive are the animals of Zoopark Stěžery and the excellent estate of Častolovice Castle (owned by an interior designer who’s done a cracking job of combining history and homely features). By night, the place to be is Hradec Králové Observatory, where you can gaze up into the stars with some expert help.
