Now here’s a nifty north Wales holiday spot – St Mary’s Holiday Park is in a handy Denbighshire location next to Gronant Dunes, just outside Prestatyn (and about a mile and a half from the resort’s main beach and golf club). Access via a main road means it’s easy to get in and out even with touring vehicles, and there’s a bus stop just outside for convenient access to public transport (including summertime open-top bus services). Plant yourselves down here for a little while and you’ll be in a prime spot for exploring the north Wales coastline – Rhyl’s close by as well, and days out in Llandudno or Conwy or over on Anglesey are all well within reach. Turning your sights inland might take you for hikes in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape or to the historic streets of Chester. And while the location’s a particularly good one for travelling around, there’s also a fair amount to keep you at the park, including a fishing lake, an outdoor play area and an indoor games room, plus a tea room for refreshments. And if that’s not enough, you can simply hop on the free shuttle bus to make use of the facilities at sister parks (including a swimming pool, miniature golf, a restaurant and kids’ activities). As a firmly family-friendly park, all the essential facilities are covered too, including a launderette and a bathroom block with showers, toilets and accessible facilities. Family pet need a break too? You’ll be pleased to hear that dogs are welcome at St Mary’s Holiday Park.

Mi è piaciuto: Lovely park, play area for kids, toilet block was clean.

Non mi è piaciuto: Toilet block was little too far from the field but we managed. Not the sites fault but some other camper walked their dogs behind our tents and didn’t clean up after them and played awful music all night.

Mi è piaciuto: Shower block was clean

Non mi è piaciuto: Poorly maintained, no recycling, storage areas not hidden from view, cafe very expensive, pot wash area had tiny sinks with auto off water taps that shut off after 5 seconds , showers have auto off button taps that shut off after 5 seconds ( very annoying), grass cuttings everywhere just ends up in the awning, raised flowerbeds with no flowers growing, no edge strimming just made it look scruffy, zero effort by whoever runs this place to make it a nice stay, upon my exit the guy that opened the barrier completely ignored me(rude) , no attempt made to clear litter - the grass mower man just drove over a load of litter, shredding it everywhere

Mi è piaciuto: Toilets & showers regularly cleaned. Good little outdoor playground. Owners polite & helpful. Tidy site.

Non mi è piaciuto: Advertised games room but this was closed. On arrival children went to the tea room to purchase a drink after long journey and were told no. Went to have breakfast one morning in the tea room and was told they had no food. Could do with some benches close to the playground for parents so they can sit and watch their children play.

Mi è piaciuto: Clean site, toilet block was always clean and it was a bonus to have use of their other sites swimming pool and facilities.

Non mi è piaciuto: My children named the site Shreks swamp due to the flooding pitches and constant mud even after a few sunny days it didn’t dry up. The touring pitches lack drainage and are not fit for purpose as the caravan sank around 8inches or more when the tractor came out to push it on the pitch. We were warned at reception to keep the car on the road as it will get stuck which our friends did as the ground was so soft. They explained on arrival that they had cancelled 20 pitches over the Easter bank holiday due to flooding and I was surprised with the state of the pitch we were on that they didn’t cancel ours too. The showers are fine if it’s just you in the whole shower block however once the cubicles start filling up the water pressure goes very low and it’s not easy to wash shampoo out of your hair. They also advertise a games room however this is locked and used for storage for the site.

There’s heaps to do along the north Wales coast – when you’re not hitting taking a walk through Gronant Dunes or hitting the sandy beaches in Prestatyn (five minutes’ drive), Talacre (five minutes) or Rhyl (15 minutes) you could be teeing off at Prestatyn Golf Club (five minutes), meeting marine beasts at SeaQuarium Rhyl (15 minutes) or riding the Rhyl Miniature Railway (20 minutes). Drive a little further west and you can spend the day visiting the imposing Conwy Castle (40 minutes), touring the Great Orme in Llandudno (45 minutes) or crossing the Menai Bridge to Anglesey (an hour). Minor diversions inland en route could take you to Bodnant Garden (40 minutes) or for Eryri/Snowdonia walks from Llanrwst (55 minutes). There are plenty more walks to be had close to the park in the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape, perhaps also stopping at St Asaph Cathedral (20 minutes) or Denbigh Castle (35 minutes). Crossing over into England is also a good idea, for a trip to Chester (45 minutes) for its zoo and a circuit of its city walls.
