Southpark of Bradieston Farm

For wildlife enthusiasts, there's never a bad season to visit Montrose Basin (20 minutes’ drive). Run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, this area of mudflats created by the River South Esk attracts thousands of migratory birds, from wintering geese to breeding terns in the spring. Throughout the year, the reserve is home to waders, and you might also catch a glimpse of a seal or two. Scottish history comes with spectacular coastal views at Dunnottar Castle (25 minutes). The remains of this medieval fortress are up on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea. The Dunnottar Cliffs Trail skirting Castle Haven bay leads to the dramatic Dunnicaer Sea Stack. There’s something for the whole family at Crathes Castle (45 minutes). While the grown-ups check out the building’s splendid 16th-century architecture and decorated ceilings (or the walled garden), the kids might prefer to let rip in the adventure playground. Afterwards, everybody can go on a nature trail spotting woodpeckers and squirrels.
