Peace Place Pilgrim Bivouac

Mi è piaciuto: Loved the chickens that roam the site, and the friendly goats. Our 2 year old couldn't get enough of them! We loved the kind and helpful owners Elizabeth and Ted and their friendly dogs. We loved the peace and tranquility of the place. And the sunsets! We loved that you can leave your car at the site, and walk to the village, to the sea, to St Peter's Chapel through paths and quiet little roads. We had a wonderful break there.

Mi è piaciuto: I have just spent 4 nights at Peace Place and loved it. As a woman travelling alone I felt safe and grounded. It is not a place to stay if you like new and plush as amenities are built from upcycled materials and basic but practical. If you want a place to sit, gather yourself and tread lightly on the planet and immerse yourself in birdsong this is the place for you. Especially good for alternative thinkers.

Mi è piaciuto: Ted and Elizabeth were fantastic hosts. The campsite is basic but very welcoming and a great place to camp. Very quiet and with the added bonus of some chicken and goats wandering around. The beach is only a 20 min walk away too. 100% recommend.

Mi è piaciuto: The owner was lovely and we so enjoyed our stay. The little beach was beautiful and the site was stunning with all the wildflowers. Thank you so much Ted! The hot water and wash area was a really nice touch and we loved seeing the chickens and goats as well. We will definitely be back!

Mi è piaciuto: Ted and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts who made me feel very welcome. Their site is a perfect example of wild camping in an environment that is being returned to the natural world, I even had a lizard playing around my tent. The only sounds you hear are the calling of birds, and I took some time to sit and watch their animals as they enjoyed the warm day. I had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend it to any one that is trying to reconnect with nature or just have some good old peace and quiet

Mi è piaciuto: Wonderful wild camp feel. With only a small number of pitches, the site is extremely peaceful and a conscious effort has been made to keep the area untouched and natural. I loved being welcomed by the hens and two friendly dogs as we got set up, with sheep and goats to say hello to too. Great place to escape the city life for a night. We enjoyed some of the local vineyards and took a stroll along the local coastline.

Non mi è piaciuto: This is a good 100% honest review. When we arrived (after calling as site is not visible) the entrance was full of scrap cars and disused house items, old broken tables etc. we was directed to a space that wasn't big enough for our tent as the wild grass and weeds were nearly taller than myself. Owner got a mower and cut it a little but our guide ropes were still placed in weeded area. The base area of pitch was still very long and the ground uneven so our new tent wouldn't sit right. We said we'd selected the electric option on pitch up and he took my lead and went and plugged it into an extension lead. We was told not to tread on the long grass due to flowers (these we're definitely weeds) and also as someone had an accident the night before requiring hospital treatment... anyway still not worrying I went to the compost toilet, I lifted the lid to be met with 100's and I mean 100's of flies! In face I couldn't sit down as the flies would have landed on my nether regions and I'm recovering from cancer down there and couldn't risk the germs the flies could pass on! While in tent we could hear roosters that were in a pen next to all the tents and other campers said they start at 3am so everyone gets woken up. We went out to the pub and when back the owners said I needed to pay £10 for the electric, I proved with email I'd selected and paid for this and said no more. We then went out again and came back to find our electric had been disconnected and we was shocked as we had no way of having a drink or anything! They since went on to pitch up and changed the options to not having electric options as they'd realised they'd done something wrong, showing guilt! I've camped for many many years and always booked via pitch up so know how to work the booking but I have never in my whole life seen such a scrap yard as camp site. It really needs to be seen to be believed! We took the tent down and left at 8pm the same day and went home as after what we'd already come across I didn't fancy being woken at 3am by roosters and not being able to have a cuppa due to electric being removed. I thought it very very rude of the owners to do this after I'd proved I'd selected an electric pitch and paid the full amount it asked for. How can you do that to someone? Right next to the toilet is a wooded area and sign posted the pee path, apparently it's where you can also toilet, this area really smelled strong of urine in the warm sunshine! The owners dogs free roam and happily lifted his leg to pee up tents! He also liked to enter your tent, which I wasn't happy with as the dog had a very dirty bottom. This all sounds crazy but I'm just writing this review as honest as I can in hope that others will not be as shocked as I was. Yes if you want a cheap no frills camp up then go but if you like a flat pitch and clean facilities and be able to sleep later than 3am then go for it. But as soon as you enter the gates you'll realise this was an honest review.

Dal gestore: We very much regret that the wild camping experience on three acres of landscaped meadow grassland that we offer at Peace Place Pilgrim Bivouac gave you no enjoyment. Your review takes the form of a dramatic account but I shall examine with you first the details of your booking. This was for a pitch described by Pitchup as an Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch. The dimensions given for this are five metres by five metres. Upon your arrival you stated very assertively that you had booked an electric hook-up. While we had no record of this you emphasised that you had an email to this effect from PITCHUP. In view of this we allocated a space to you within range of our electric point. We had no wish to discourage you. Your previous experience, as you related, was as a glamper , but you had brought your new tent for its first try-out. It became apparent that your tent was over seven metres long but I agreed to accommodate you on the 5x5m pitch that you had booked, enlarging it by scything back the borders of standing meadow grass. Please note that our mowing machine use is limited to trimming pathways and will not cut standing grass. Upon connecting the electric hook-up you then powered up your mains driven air-pump to inflate your mattress(s). The matter of the payment for the hook-up being unsatisfied we consulted all the records at PITCHUP and printed out the details. Your booking was for a pitch with the option of a hook-up but you insisted that you would not pay for the option because you weren't using the electricity except for pumping up the beds. In which case it was appropriate to disconnect the hook-up. I should point out that you said nothing to me about electricity for hot drinks. Unknown to me you had mentioned this to my wife. Regardless of this we do supply boiling water mornings and evenings from the electric urn at the stables building. With regard to some of the details provided in your account these may be illustrated by a tour of the storage and work areas of the farm which resemble those of most other farmyards across the world. I appreciate that many people from an urban or suburban environment find such 'chaos' disturbing but many of our other visitors express a sense of appreciation for this natural anarchy and the relief it provides from the rigid controls of town and city.
