Valdevaqueros beach, just across from the site, may well keep you occupied for quite some time with its watersports activities and options for eating and drinking. There are several other lovely beaches around though, so you might like also to plan days out at the dunes of Punta Paloma (five minutes’ drive), wide and sandy Tarifa beach (five minutes) or the natural pools of Bolonia (20 minutes). This part of the Andalusia coast faces out onto the Atlantic Ocean, so that means there are often good waves for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. If you’re not yet up to scratch with the art of staying upright on water, there are plenty of watersports schools along the coastline that can teach you all the tricks you need, and rent you the relevant kit. Even if you’re not catching a ferry, it’s worth heading down to Tarifa (10 minutes) for a look around anyway, stopping at the Puerto de Jerez, San Mateo church and Castle of Tarifa.
