Balatonkeresztúr makes a lovely base for time spent by Lake Balaton – it’s got a quiet beach, a pretty church and a couple of wineries to visit. If you don’t fancy swimming in the lake, head south to the pools at Marcali Spa and Leisure Centre (15 minutes’ drive) – perhaps stopping at the village of Buzsák (25 minutes) while you’re away from the lake, to learn about its famous embroidery tradition. Heading west, Hévíz (20 minutes) has a swimming lake and the Bobo Fun Park, and there's some good birdwatching around Little Balaton (25 minutes). The opulent Festetics Palace (20 minutes) should certainly be on your to-do list as well – it's one of the finest attractions in the area. Up on the northern shores of the lake, there are lots more gorgeous viewpoints to stop at, and several lakeside wineries where you can have a scenic drink or two. Szigliget Castle (40 minutes) is also worth a visit, or you can take a boat trip through the underground caves at Tapolca (45 minutes).
