Then schedule a trip to Camping Gippelblick Kernhof, a quiet site in Kernhof at the foot of the Gippel mountain in Lower Austria. For outdoorsy guests, these well-maintained pitches are in a very fine spot for breaking in some new hiking boots (or indeed, donning your trusty well-worn pair). There are trails to the local mountains, the Gippel and Göller, directly from the site, plus more hiking and cycling trails within a short drive of the site. For your post-hike wind-down, Camping Gippelblick Kernhof has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere along with modern amenities such as showers and toilets. There's a communal TV room with comfy seating where you can chill out, and families with energetic kids should also very much appreciate the play area and tennis facilities. Planning a day trip while you're in this part of the world? Mariazell, a city famed for its winter sports as well as for being a pilgrimage destination, is 25 minutes’ drive away. Locally, there's a small zoo with a ‘camel theatre’ attraction five minutes’ walk away. On a more practical front, a grocery shop is 15 minutes’ walk away.

A aimé The campsite is very clean, with tidy showers and toilets, and comfortable spots for tents. The hosts are very kind and helpful. The nature around is stunning – perfect for hiking and relaxing.

Whether you're heading out for the morning, afternoon or the whole day, there are plenty of stunning spots to visit from Camping Gippelblick Kernhof. Perhaps begin with a drive to Mariazell (25 minutes’ drive) for Salza Valley scenery and a stroll around to gawp at the historic sites in this popular pilgrimage destination. For those who like to go wild swimming, Erlaufsee (half an hour) is a stunning mountain lake where you will certainly get a refreshing dip. The beach has two waterslides and a kids’ playground. The lake also has a boat rental place (with paddleboards up for grabs too) and a diving school. Like a hearty dose of adrenaline? Right next to the hiking trails on Hennesteck, there's a zipwiring centre called Zipline Annaberg (25 minutes), whose wire runs parallel to the mountain chairlift. Reaching up to 75 kilometres per hour, this zipwire is all about taking in the mountain scenery at speed. Maybe you only have a couple of hours to squeeze in another activity. If so, try the Schleierwasserfall (15 minutes), a gorgeous waterfall just a short walk away from the road.
