Time to escape the crowds and find some space to relax? You’ll certainly find plenty of that at Ooraminna Homestead – around 500 acres of space, in fact, with sweeping views over the vast desert and wilderness landscapes of Australia’s centre.
This area is Arrernte Country, where the people have had deep connections to the land for tens of thousands of years. Ooraminna Homestead was transformed into a cattle ranch over a century ago before then being reimagined in the 1980s as a film set with a real sense of the Aussie outback. These days, the homestead has been set up to protect the environment and give visitors a taste of life in these ancient bushlands.
Getting to this Northern Territory site is an adventure in itself – it’s a half-hour drive from Alice Springs, with the final part of the journey along a sandy dirt road. It’s a very special experience once you arrive though – the pitches are lined with red rocky outcrops and blue mallee gum trees, and trails lead to a billabong and a spectacular lookout point.
This is a place where you can really escape into the wild, taking hikes by day and sleeping under the stunningly starry desert skies. And while it’s been designed to have a minimal impact on the environment, it’s not without its comforts – the site has a lovely outdoor pool along with amenities including wifi, a launderette and bathrooms with toilets and showers. Campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you make the most of those wonderful outdoor evenings.

Pit Bull Terrier, Tosa japonais, Dogue Argentin et Fila Brasileiro) et/ou les espèces suivantes : Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler et toute espèce de chien Mastiff ou Tosa.
- Votre chien doit être identifié par tatouage ou micropuce.

Itinéraire
Google Maps can be unreliable – do not follow a route that takes you past the Alice Springs Airport, or you will end up on a dirt track through Deep Well Station.
For the best route from Alice Springs township, travel out through the Heavitree Gap and head towards the airport then take the right after the turn for the South Stuart Highway to Adelaide.

You may well find that you largely choose to stay close to home while staying here, perhaps heading out for walks along the trails, taking photos and finding quiet space to meditate or just soak up the amazing scenery and silence.
If you’d like to venture out, perhaps plan walks through more stunning scenery at Heavitree Gap (half an hour’s drive) or among the rock formations at Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park (35 minutes).
Alice Springs (half an hour) is worth some of your time as well – up here you can learn about local life at Alice Springs School of the Air or visit the Alice Springs Desert Park to see native animals and plants and learn about how Aboriginal people make use of the desert landscapes. There are more animal encounters at the Kangaroo Sanctuary and Rescue Centre and Alice Springs Reptile Centre too.
