Always fancied the idea of wild swimming? Book a stay at pet-friendly Moss Lane Cottage near Whitchurch and don’t forget to pack your swimmers. You’ll be needing them, as this peaceful pop-up site is in the quiet North Wales village of Hanmer, which edges a large lake known as Hanmer Mere – a mighty popular spot with open-water swimmers. Covering 2.5 acres across two fields – one for tents and tourers and one for off-grid tents – the site is sheltered by trees on two sides and accessed down a farm track. If you’re looking for an alfresco family adventure, groups are welcome to pitch up together on the camping field, which is perfectly level. It’s a cinch to access safe and quiet lanes from the site for cycling or hiking down to the mere (five minutes by bike or 15 minutes on foot). After taking a refreshing dip, you might like to head to the local village pub (five minutes’ drive, dogs welcome) for a rejuvenating pint. Simple facilities back on site include a washing-up area and a shared fridge. There's an ensuite facility housed in a horse trailer, which has a compost toilet, a hand-washing basin with hot and cold running water and a gas shower (just one of the three showers across the site). A covered and communal eating area is also provided for you to catch up with family and new-found friends at the end of a day’s adventuring.

A aimé The owners really think of everything. It’s clear they understand what people may need when wanting to relax when away. Not imposing but there if anything is needed. Great setting. Hanmer is an unspoilt gem. Facilities were clean and functioned perfectly. Don’t come here for a polished touring site. Come here for a relaxed getaway with simple walks and the mere nearby. Thankyou for a great stay.

A aimé We had a good stay at this quiet and peaceful site. The pitches are well spaced out, which gave everyone plenty of room. It was nice to be able to have a fire in the evenings. The owners were responsive when there was an issue with the electric which was appreciated.

There was plenty of space in the fridges, and the undercover tables and games were a useful addition. All the facilities were clean and well kept. A solid option if you're looking for a simple, no-fuss camping experience.

N'a pas aimé There were no lights in the undercover section until after a power cut on our last night, so it seemed like there may have been a fault. It made a big difference once the lights were working, especially when heading to the loos after dark

The indoor loo and shower door also wasn’t very secure. The lock was slightly out of line, making it hard to use, and at one point it stopped working altogether. It meant there wasn’t a reliable way to lock the door, which wasn’t ideal. I was glad I wasn’t on my own and had someone to mind the door while I showered.

Réponse du gestionnaire : Unfortunately the lock got broken at some stage during the weekend, once this had been pointed out to us by another customer on Sunday, it was immediately repaired.
The light switch for the communal area is on the wall by the fridge next to the games. We rely on customers to turn them on and off themselves.

Attractions à proximité

The water's not too cold apparently, but it's still best if you can pick a warm summer’s day for a swim in Hanmer Mere (15 minutes’ walk) so that you can have a bit of a laze on the small sandy beach after all your exertions. Other local wild-swimming spots include Whitemere (10 minutes’ drive) and Ellesmere (15 minutes). No need to swim if it’s just not your thing; both these lakes also have scenic walks bordering the water, and at Ellesmere you can keep a look out for sculpture hidden in the trees. Alderford Lake (15 minutes) is another lush spot with a water park, a safe alternative to wild swimming for kids, and a shop and café. Water features large hereabouts. There’s more hiking at Whixall Moss (20 minutes), with many paths through peaty marshland. The Llangollen Canal is carried across the River Dee at the majestic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (half an hour), a lovely spot for canal-side walks and awesome views. You can also potter down the canal by horse-drawn barge, or hire day boats from Whittington Wharf (20 minutes). For more adventurous days out, the River Dee provides challenging canoeing at Llangollen (35 minutes), and if that’s still too tame for you, try white-water rafting at the National White Water Centre near Bala (an hour).
