It's a small, simple site, but Gypsy Castle Camping ticks an awful lot of boxes. Firstly, it's on the outskirts of the brilliant Powys town of Hay-on-Wye. And then there's the fact that it's in the Brecon Beacons National Park, a short stroll away from refreshing River Wye scenery. Given the above, it's clear how this prime patch could be just the job for those on the hunt for self-sustained breaks. In need of some holiday reading? In Hay-on-Wye's bookshop-lined streets you'll be able to pick up material on pretty much every conceivable subject. In town, there are also pubs, restaurants and a nice number of independent shops. The Warren, a gorgeous common on the Wye, is a few minutes' walk away. If you want a site with a swish amenities block with modcons, this is not the place for you. What Gypsy Castle Camping does have, however, is two horsebox showers, two portable plastic toilets, two sinks with cold water and a chemical disposal point. Well-behaved dogs can be brought here, but please keep them on a lead and properly supervised – there's livestock about. When questions about site etiquette or the local area come up, just ask the manager who drops by to touch base at regular intervals.

A aimé Great location not far from the river wye and no far from the town . Amazing view of the mountains and great for star gazing on a clear night . If you love river walks then it’s a great budget location for you .
We will definitely be going back again for a cheap weekend away

A aimé We had a lovely stay at gypsy castle camping, colin was very lovely and welcoming. It has great walks into the town of hay and not far from the river. Would definitely recommend for a cheap easy camping trip :)

A aimé Excellent small campsite. Electric hook ups were well spaced and when we were there the site was quiet and peaceful.

8 minute walk to the warren for human and dog swimming and 10 minutes into the centre of hay.

Facilities at the campsite were basic but perfectly fine for a long weekend. We never had to queue and found we had everything we needed for a family with 2 young kids.

Beautiful Views.

Easy walking distance both to The Warren and Town.

Clean Facilities.

The owner (Colin) couldn't have been more helpful. He was a mine of local information and when we had trouble with our stove he turned up with a spare one and a tank of propane for us to borrow for the duration of our stay.

A aimé Quiet, right by river, lovely scenery, spacious pitch, easy walk to town.

N'a pas aimé Facilities are basic, portaloos and only two showers plus outside cold water sinks.

To fully take advantage of being so close to the Wye, you'll want to spend a generous portion of your holiday messing about by, in or on the water. Local coarse fishing opportunities are a five-minute drive away, while those looking to expend a bit more energy can head to Celtic Canoes (five minutes) to rent a riverworthy craft. Other, bigger bodies of water like Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) are also worth scouting out, particularly if you're into hiking – the lake and its surrounding villages have some of the loveliest walks around. If there's demand for further outdoor action, you can easily make the trip to Black Mountain Activities (10 minutes), where a range of land and water-based options are yours for the choosing. While 100% Welsh holidays certainly have appeal, travellers planning on staying here a bit longer might also like to look at what's over the border in England. The top three highlights? It's a tough call, but Neolithic Arthur's Stone (15 minutes), Hereford's Cider Museum (25 minutes) and Hampton Court Castle (45 minutes) are all strong contenders.
