Wow, what a view… If you’re heading to the Highlands and Islands in search of some of that stunning scenery Scotland’s renowned for, you’ll certainly want to take a look at Altnaharra Lairg Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite.
It’s a truly special location here, in a remote spot right on the banks of Loch Naver and with uninterrupted views across to Ben Klibreck. As you can imagine, it’s incredibly peaceful too, and in a wonderful position for those who’d like to go walking, check out the local wildlife (red deer roam nearby and over 70 species of birds can be spotted from the pitches) or just slow down and soak up the views.
And that’s not all – there’s free fly fishing from the shore of Loch Naver and the site also has non-motorised boating rights so you’ll be able to launch a canoe or rowing boat if you wish.
This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, with both members and non-members able to book pitches and discounted rates available for members. Please note the price displayed here is for members; non-members will need to select the £15 per night extra or buy a year-long membership.
This really is a remote spot, so you’ll be treated to the true peace that comes with a wilderness location and some of the darkest skies anywhere in the UK. It’s worth being prepared though – the nearest shops are about 20 miles away in Lairg and there are no facilities beyond a chemical disposal point, so you’ll need to be self-contained and well stocked up to enjoy your stay.

Itinéraire
Turn right off the A836 (Lairg - Tongue) at the crossroads half a mile past Altnaharra Hotel onto B873 (Syre). The Sste is on the right in about 3 miles, between the road and loch shore. The minor road to Hope is not suitable for caravans. If approaching from the north (Bettyhill) on B873: on arrival drive through the gate into site entrance, park up and then book in at office. This is to prevent causing a traffic hazard and having to reverse on a narrow road.

Attractions à proximité
This area is a real playground for outdoor enthusiasts – bring your rods for fly fishing on Loch Naver, launch a canoe or small boat to explore the shoreline or settle in with your binoculars to see whether you can spot the local red deer and tick off a few bird species.
There’s plenty for walkers to enjoy too, from easygoing hill rambles at Ben Loyal (20 minutes’ drive away) to more challenging Munro trails at Ben Klibreck (20 minutes) and Ben Hope (35 minutes). If you’re interested in history you may also like to stop by at the Rosal Highland Clearance Village site (20 minutes).
Although it’s not actually on the route of the NC500, this site makes a great inland detour for those following the trail. If you’re just stopping over for a short while, how about a day trip to one of the most spectacular coastal spots? East Keodale Pier (an hour and three quarters) is the place for the ferry and minibus to Cape Wrath to see the Clo Mor cliffs, Britain’s highest sea cliffs.
