There’s ‘remote’, and then there’s ‘really remote’, which pretty much sums up The Wee Horsebox, a cosy adults-only hut in a peaceful back garden on the Isle of Lewis, in the Hebrides. Sitting off the B8060 road in the small coastal village of Lemreway, this is the place to come if you don’t want to be found: it’s blissfully private and utterly peaceful.
First things first: there is no running water here, which means no hot water and no shower, either. Fresh drinking water, however, is provided (and top-ups are available). What you do get (besides a super-chilled vibe, far-reaching views of the Eishken Hills and a tail-wagging welcome from the resident Labrador) is a snug sleeping area with a contoured double bed designed for comfort and warmth after a day exploring the island’s ragged coastline.
The horsebox also has a compact kitchenette with a sink, a kettle, an electric cooker and a fridge, plus all necessary utensils to whip up a meal. In addition to ambient lighting and a heater, the hut also has a modern composting toilet.
When you need a change of scenery from the hut, you can relocate to the igloo, where you can snuggle under a warm blanket while sipping a hot cocoa (or a wee dram…) and admiring the night sky. There is almost no light pollution around these parts, and the stargazing is quite spectacular – if you’re lucky, you might spot the Northern Lights.

Attractions à proximité
In Stornoway (45 minutes’ drive), you can explore the area around the harbour, maybe stopping for a sauna with sea views at Saltbox Sauna. There are archaeology and agricultural collections at Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean, and a World War I memorial up on a hill overlooking the town.
If you are after some traditional Scottish souvenirs, head to Harris (50 minutes), home of the famed Harris tweed. Also in the town is the Isle of Harris Distillery, which runs tastings tours between April and December. From Harris, drive a further 25 minutes to the vast sandy expanse of Luskentyre Beach, on the west coast.
The Butt of Lewis (an hour and 30 minutes) is the northernmost point on the Isle of Lewis. On this rugged headland is the 19th-century Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, a red-brick tower that claims to sit in the windiest spot in the UK. Keep your eyes peeled for grey seals, gannets and shags.
