Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to pet friendly and fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, you’ll need to set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle and toaster) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own soap and toilet paper). There's also a shower, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store in Malpas and the site is two minutes from a chip shop and a good Indian restaurant. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

A aimé : As a young family we felt so welcome at Larkhill. The site was so lovely, full of horses, chickens and amazing views.
The toilets and shower were very clean. Everything was easy to use and signed clearly. We had a great time and are already planning on booking here again. Our young daughter had so much fun and the site was very secure for children. We even got some fresh eggs as we left. Couldn’t recommend this site and the family who run it enough, had the best time.

A aimé : Stayed as a family , 5 tents & around 15 of us altogether. Both children & adults all enjoyed themselves! The kids absolutely loved the chickens , horses & the rabbit. Owner is lovely & very welcoming. Pitches were spot on. There’s 2 toilets on site. 1 shower ( £1 for 10 mins ) kitchen has hot & cold water , kettle , toaster , fridge/freezer , provides washing up liquid & sponges etc and also has seating area off the kitchen. Both toilets have hand gel & hand wash provided & we’re always clean. Take your own toilet roll as it isn’t provided & after reading other reviews about people just taking it i understand why this is. Gates at the front of the site are always shut which is reassuring when you go with young children ( not locked ). 10 mins max drive to the shops & local take aways/chippy. Fishing lake opposite. Great campsite & fantastic price! We will all definitely be back again.

A aimé : It’s our 4th time here, ideal location shops just a 5min drive away it’s clean and tidy, the kids love the horses and chickens and the owners friendly, plenty of room to pitch up

A aimé : The site was very clean and in a quiet location. Claire was a lovely host and we liked the fresh eggs each morning. The kitchen facilities were great for us. It is a smaller site which we preferred. It isn’t too far from Chester if you want a day in the city.

N'a pas aimé: We needed to have £1 coins to use the shower which we weren’t aware of until we arrived. It wasn’t an issue to pay just that we didn’t have cash on us so make sure to take coins for the shower.

A aimé : The site was easy to find and allowed late entry. Very affordable and seemed delightful. The host, Claire, made sure to wait for us and explained where everything was and had a sign for our pitch. The amenities were very clean and in good working condition, were extremely accessible and cleaning supplies were available to clean up after ourselves. There are two toilets. One shower which is on a meter approx 10 mins for £1 coin. Claire said she has change if you didn’t bring any money. A washing machine. A fridge freezer and freezer. A kettle. Hot and cold taps indoors to wash up and scrubbing brushes. A cold outdoor tap. There were chickens and a rabbit near the tent pitches for our toddler to chat to and enjoy watching. There’s a little lounge indoors with sofas and books, emergency information on a board, there’s benches and chairs outside and a table. Claire was readily available if needed and she was extremely kind and friendly.
There was not much phone signal, no WiFi that I knew of- depending what camping trip you prefer this is either perfect or terrible! For me, it was perfect. I love to get away and switch off when camping.

Itinéraire

If approaching from A49 from the north, turn right signed Cholmondeley, opposite the Cholmondeley arms, vice versa from south. Go through the woods and Shay Lane is the second left, turn opposite a gatehouse to Cholmondeley castle. Also look out for a sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. The site is opposite the fishery. Drive through the stable yard and under the arch to the site. Hook-ups are on the left, past the hen run. Don't drive on the far right of the field as it can sometimes be wet. If approaching from A41 south, Shay Lane is the last turn to the right before reaching the Hampton roundabout, again see sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. If approaching from the north, Shay Lane is first left after the Hampton Roundabout. Up a fairly steep narrow lane and the site is in the dip on the left. If the gate is shut, don't worry: it won't be locked even though there's a chain visible.

Attractions à proximité

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
