Fancy a rural escape from your urban life? You’ve got a convenient base at Kampaoh KikoPark Rural – at just over an hour’s drive from Valencia and around two-and-a-half hours from Madrid, it makes weekend breaks in a landscape of valleys, gorges, forests and vineyards totally feasible. Handier still, you don’t need to cart lots of gear with you, as the accommodation units are all ready and waiting for you. Designed to resemble a traditional regional village – complete with church tower and whitewashed cottages – the glampsite complex has spacious, tree-sheltered plots with drinking water and drainage, as well as modern showers with constant hot water, washing-up facilities and a launderette. Family-wise, the site has lots to recommend it too, from a play area for younger kids to the small outdoor swimming pool, the small supermarket to the terrace restaurant. Should you wish to eat out some evenings, the pretty hill village of Villargordo del Cabriel (10 minutes’ drive) has a couple of tapas bars and a fine-dining restaurant. However, most people who arrive at Kampaoh KikoPark Rural are looking for outdoor sporting action. If that’s you, try kayaking on Embalse de Contreras reservoir (half an hour), or hiking in Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park (20 minutes).

Attractions à proximité

Whether you’re a hiker, birder or extreme sports fan, you’ll be drawn to the rugged riverine landscape of Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park (20 minutes’ drive). Endangered golden eagles and eagle owls can sometimes be spotted, and walking trails criss-cross the canyon scenery, following the meanders of the Cabriel River. If you want to get the adrenaline really pumping, try bungee jumping, rock climbing or canyoning in the gorge. If you’re travelling with younger kids, take them on some the more gentle trails through the protected park – there is a well-made track that lead to spectacular views of the spiky Los Cuchillos rock formations. Alternatively, lots of fun can be had on the calm waters of Embalse de Contreras reservoir (half an hour), including kayaking, fishing and paddleboarding. To ingest some Valencian culture, drive up to the exquisite Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Remedio (half an hour), which has an ornately gilded baroque altarpiece as well as far-reaching views over forested foothills.
