Animal encounters on your list of things to do during your African hols? (Surely so…) Shangrila Innibos Country Lodge is a wise choice of base, being less than 10 minutes’ walk from elephant and monkey sanctuaries. And that’s not it for the critter experiences: Hartbeespoort is also home to animal parks dedicated to the likes of cheetahs, lions and snakes, so you’re seriously well-placed to get acquainted with native beasts. But the sights don’t stop there, as there’s some pretty mountainous scenery to get to grips with here, too. The surrounding Magaliesberg mountain range and Hartbeespoort Dam put all sorts of sporty things within easy reach, both on land and in the water. Outdoorsy activities nailed, it’s back to base for a deserved dip after a busy day. There’s a heated outdoor pool here and, for the ultimate in relaxation, a fab collection of treatments at Shangrila Innibos’ spa – massages, facials, hand and foot treats are all on the menu. Stomachs aren’t forgotten, either – the on-site restaurant dishes up traditional home-cooked eats, and barbecues are permitted if you fancy rustling up your own nosh. The playground and trampoline should keep the kids entertained while eats are sorted (or allow parents a little chillout time). Please note that there is no gravel road to the nearest town.

Starting with the animal picks – and you may as well, since they begin a short walk from base – there’s The Elephant Sanctuary (two-minute walk), Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary (five minutes) and Chameleon Village Lion Park (25 minutes). Jump in the car instead and venture only slightly further to Hartbeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park (10-minute drive), Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre (15 minutes), Hartbeespoort Dam Aquarium (15 minutes) and Lion & Safari Park (25 minutes). A popular choice here is the Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort (15 minutes), where gorgeous views of the Magaliesberg peaks and Hartbeespoort Dam are waiting at the top. While at the dam, take to the water with a boat or ferry cruise from Harties Watersports Centre (10 minutes), or – if you’re feeling brave – opt for one of their more extreme activities, like tube rides, banana boating, jetskiing and speedboat rides. For more scenic views, Bill Harrop's Original Balloon Safaris (20 minutes), Ama Zwing Zwing Zip Line Tour (25 minutes) and Harties Horse Trail Safaris (half an hour) offer up plenty of ways to take it all in.
