Longing for an introduction to 1066 country? Limitless walks and forest rises for mountain biking or den-making at your base? Based on the edge of a 600-acre woodland within a private 2000-acre beech estate, Beech Estate Campsite should certainly meet your expectations on both fronts. And bonus points must be awarded for the fact that every pitch (no matter the type) comes with its own firepit area too. It’s within these splendid Sussex woodlands that Beech Estate Campsite is based. In keeping with these natural surroundings, the site is completely off grid… so don’t expect things like hairdryers, phone chargers, power points, butler service, silk sheets or hot tubs. In their place, there’s a mains water supply with multiple water points throughout the site, lots of toilets (including five flushing loos and four eco toilets) and hot-water bucket showers. There are permanent wardens on site to lend a helping hand, too. Overall, expect a small-scale, quiet and relaxed vibe free from amplified music and with a low noise policy from 10pm. There are areas in the woods for kids to make dens and run wild – there’s no access for the public, so guests have exclusive use of the estate woodlands. The estate also has 110 acres of ancient meadowland dedicated to conservation, which supports wildlife like buzzard, kestrel, orchids, ox-eye daisies and over 30 species of butterfly. What a location this is for getting out and about too: Beech Estate Campsite is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, five minutes’ drive from historic Battle, with its battlefield, abbey and cafés, shops and pubs. It’s just over two hours' drive from London, 20 minutes from the south coast and 25 minutes from Hastings. A number of local pubs are nearby, including three within 25 minutes’ amble of the site.

Tente cloche Wild Glamping

A aimé The glamping bell tents and pitch were very clean and tidy, with everything you need for a trip. The fire pit setup was perfect for sitting round and relaxing. What was also really nice was the privacy and spacing between the pitches.

Very family orientated, and a really nice vibe to the place. It’s set in forestry so again, good for walks and nature lovers.

A aimé Staff were excellent and friendly. How to use all of there facilities and the rules they had on the campsite were set out really well. I loved ther information board, that was reallly helpful and the estate itself was an incredible walk with some much nature. My woodland campsite was in a nice area and had some good seclusion to it. Was always really peaceful at night and the hot bucket showers were a nice touch. I would definitely come again, but maybe later in the year as it would have been more peaceful. Was unlucky with the weather, but still an amazing stay.

N'a pas aimé The only thing in the shower area, would be to have a shelve nearer the bucket shower, so you can put soap or shampoo in, then its easier to get to hand.

A aimé I've given this site a high rating because it's quite beautiful and spread out. I'll add that i was there with my 16 year old son and we were hammock camping. We were also there for a couple of nights when the site was almost empty so I can't comment on what it's like when busy, I was told when I arrived that around 250 people were there the week before. Unfortunately the 2 hammock areas were right at the bottom of the sloping camp site but it gave me a chance to go past a few camp areas Which all looked to have their own space without any one else needing to go close by as well as being secluded from view. I should add that although the overall site seemed to be on a slope the individual pitches looked flat. The facilities all seemed well looked after and if you are a family that doesn't like open field camping then this is a great alternative. I wouldn't go back as a hammock camper but with a family tent and choice of pitch it's on my preferred camping site list.

N'a pas aimé Disliked is a strong word. Cars could go no further than the car park. Wheel barrows were supplied to transport camping things to the pitch but if you were pitched in the further areas then that could be quite a haul and if you were down the slope then a harder journey back up to the car park when you pack up. As I mentioned, the hammock spots were at the bottom of the site so quite a trek up hill on the way back. We were traveling light so a wheelbarrow each and one trip was all we needed but if we had a big tent and lots of equipment, I'd make sure I was camped near the car park end and not down the slop. I wasn't used to an office which was only open very restricted hours outside of "holidays" i definitely disliked that as i rely on those offices to carry a bit of milk and some other bits and pieces. I also thought that both of the hammock sites were inadequate for more than one hammock but not advertised as solo hammock sites. The only way I could get two hammocks to fit was to cover up the fire pit with half of one. As a hammock camper I would not have chosen either of the 2 spots to advertise for hammocks, certainly not more than one hammock. It can be a common problem for woodland camping sites too advertise for hammock campers without realising what we need for a good site. Any camp site advertising to hammock campers should get a hammock camper to approve hanging spots.

Réponse du gestionnaire : Hi Richard,

Thank you for your 10/10 review! We're really happy that you enjoyed the beautiful forest and the seclusion of our pitches.

Before creating the pitches, we canvassed (excuse the pun) the opinion of quite a few hammockers, and they all said that they would prefer as much seclusion as possible (and we don't allow cars on site in order to preserve its peaceful nature, and so that children can explore the site freely - and because it's a forest most of it is inaccessible to cars anyway!).

We're also an off grid campsite, which is why we don't have a shop, although our reception is open for at least 4 hours per day (and 6 hours at weekends) for assistance and if more extras (firewood, charcoal, kindling etc.) are required.

Thanks again and we hope to see you soon!

A aimé Beech Estate is one of the loveliest, off-grid, back-to-nature campsites I’ve ever stayed at. I originally booked a pitch for 1 night, but loved it so much I ended up staying for 4.

Leanne, Joe and the team were super friendly and helpful and I felt really welcome and comfortable as a solo female camper on a family-friendly site.

The pitches are well-spread out and feel really private, and you have lots of space to enjoy just for yourself. I explored the trails through the woods, enjoyed the peace and quiet, and getting to see the stars at night, took an outdoor morning yoga class and cooked on the campfire. And the bucket showers were so fab that I want one at home now!

I can’t wait to visit again 🏕️

A aimé The overall feel of the campsite was top notch, we couldn’t have asked for better surroundings. Perfect for anyone looking to get away from it all and just enjoy switching off in the stunning grounds of this estate. Loved everything from the bucket showers to the fantastic pitches with fire pits. Everything you possibly hope to have is all ready for you and makes the stay that much more enjoyable. The hosts were great and recommended the great walks, local activities, towns and pubs, especially the white hart. We only stayed for 2 nights but felt like we could have stayed forever. Thanks!

N'a pas aimé The mosquitos 😂

A aimé The best places to camp in the wild nature!!!
Tent pitches are perfectly adapted to fit into the surrounding forest. There is a separate forest path to each tent pitch, which ensures that your tent site will give you peace and quiet and you can fully enjoy the surrounding forest nature. There is a secured place for a bonfire, compost toilets are perfectly clean and well-kept, a great idea with shower buckets. Beautiful paths through the forest.
Joe and Hugh were incredibly helpful during my stay at this campsite, for which I am extremely grateful. It's so beautiful there, everything is so well-kept, surrounded by nature, birds singing, peace and quiet, that I can't wait to go back there.

N'a pas aimé That I had to leave this wonderful place and go back to work ;) ;)
