Family-friendly pitches in Gloucestershire’s untamed Forest of Dean – it doesn’t get much better than that. Except it does… because at Forest of Dean Camping, guests can join miles of purpose-built cycling and hiking tracks straight from the pitches. Whether you’re after a quick walk with the dog – your four-legged companions are very welcome here – a pub crawl in local villages or a whole-day biking adventure, they’re all close by. After a day in the forest, head back to your pitch for an evening around the embers. No need to lug everything from home, as there are firepits for hire on a per-night basis, and logs and kindling are sold on the premises. The site also has a small shop selling the basics and alcohol (open 9am until 6pm at reception), so you’ll never get caught short without supplies – and if you want to pick up some eggs for breakfast, spuds or meat for the barbecue, there’s a local shop just 15 minutes’ stroll away. On a practical level, spotless amenities on site include a heated shower block with separate disabled facilities and a laundry room for taking care of chores. For those travelling by pedal power, there’s a secure bike room, and there’s a noticeboard at reception with local tourist information if you’re needing a bit of sightseeing inspiration.

A aimé We absolutely loved our stay and couldn’t fault it. The campsite is beautifully kept, really clean and has such a friendly, welcoming feel. It’s particularly lovely for families – being a smaller site meant we could relax while the kids played and still easily keep an eye on them.

Jess and her family were incredibly friendly and accommodating and made us feel really welcome from the moment we arrived. There was also loads of useful information available about places to visit, things to do and where to eat locally, which was a really nice touch.

The location is gorgeous and we were lucky enough to have beautiful weather. The WiFi wasn’t the strongest, but with views like that and the sun shining, we really didn’t mind!

We’ll definitely be back and would happily recommend the site to friends and family.

A aimé I loved that it was just a field and the kids had to use their imagination to think up games. We had a great stay and the hygiene rating 10/10 super clean facilities. Really enjoyed the simplicity of it all and the views were just stunning. They accommodated us in every kind of way and more than reasonable pricing. Honestly I could go on, loads of kids activities near by if you wanted time away from camp. Thank you FOD camping we all had a wonderful time.

N'a pas aimé That fire pits were available to hire when there has been such a lack of rain and the risk of fire very high! This puts the risk on fellow campers who could accidentally cause an unnecessary grass fire and potentially result in a site evacuation.

A aimé Very clean site and toilets, toilets and showers closed for 1 hour each day and this is reflective of the high cleanliness of the facilities. Disable WC is available for use during cleaning. Washing up area is fantastic albeit a little snug when in full use.

Location was great for exploring the Forest of Dean. Lots of information provided on site. Owner Jess was very friendly and helpful, loved that they had fire mats and bricks for BBQ during this heat wave to protect the grass.

Had a little shop that looked well stocked but didn't use. Would return again.

A aimé Owners were very friendly, knew the local area & were on site.
All facilities were clean.
Had bricks and fire blankets for all to use, which made us feel safe in the extreme hot weather.Freezer was good to freeze ice packs and bottled water. Lovely friendly, peaceful site in a beautiful forested area. Great for walking or biking on forest trails.

Attractions à proximité

Sporty souls can get out into the scenic Wye Valley National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) for days of canoeing, paddleboarding or cycling along the River Wye. There’s also challenging climbing at Symonds Yat (half an hour), and gorge climbing or abseiling are on hand for adrenaline junkies. More sedate local pursuits include a steam-train ride aboard the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes), which also offers lots of family-friendly attractions like murder mystery evenings. For outdoor fun in enchanting, moss-covered forest, the walking routes at Puzzlewood (also 10 minutes) are suitable for kids, and you can all learn about local history in the reconstructed cottages and museum at the Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). The spectacular remains of Cistercian Tintern Abbey (half an hour) have a gorgeous setting by the River Wye. Goodrich Castle (25 minutes) is another stunning spot where you can clamber up Norman-era towers, brave the dungeons and see relics of exquisite stained-glass windows in its half-ruined chapel.
