  • Almost wild camping in a 25-acre woodland at Netherbury in Dorset
  • Charmouth 25 minutes’ drive and Abbotsbury Swannery 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pop-up site 15 minutes’ walk from the local pub
There’s getting away from it all – and then there’s really getting away from it all. If you feel the need to do the latter, then do it somewhere like Howard’s Wood, an almost wild pop-up site on the outskirts of Netherbury in Dorset. Here you can escape into a 25-acre woodland – planted in 2003 by the landowners – and truly relax in the middle of a wildlife haven. Bring your dogs and exercise them while exploring the woods, and let the kids run around within earshot on the playing fields next to the pitches. The pretty basic setup here consists of composting toilets and hot showers, and is suitable for anyone and everyone looking for a simple camping experience out in nature yet near to some big-name Dorset attractions. For at Howard’s Wood, you can wake up to mornings filled with birdsong, with the chance of spotting deer and squirrels roaming around near your tent. After a day out at the mysterious National Trust - Cerne Giant (35 minutes’ drive) or scouring for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (half an hour), return to base for relaxing times cosying up around a firepit or cooking up a barbecue – pick up food in Beaminster or Bridport (both about 10 minutes’ drive). Alternatively you can wander down to the local pub (15 minutes’ walk), which has luscious country views, a beer garden for warmer evenings and good home-cooked food.

What customers say

A woodland "wild camping" vibe with basics. Spacious, private pitches. Friendly hosts, tranquil, with hot showers & washing areas. Fire pits available, near attractions. Note: some uneven pitches, occasional dog walkers.

Non-electric forest floor campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Almost wild camping in the woods. Great pitches in between the trees so you don’t have any direct neighbours and it is really peaceful. Great communications from Steph.

Disliked Maybe a sign from the road to find the entrance but that might just be me.

Non-electric forest floor campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Excellent back to basics campsite.
Owners are friendly and welcoming, there's hot water for showers and washing up and a composting toilet.

I stayed in a woodland pitch which was lovely and shady. Each pitch is a good distance away from the next one.

I will absolutely be staying here again.

Non-electric forest floor campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really nice off grid site, some of the pitches are a bit small and shaded but as long as you make owner aware it’s not a problem if you need a sunnnier pitch to use solar etc. showers are great clean and spacious and toilets very clean despite being compost type. Would 100% go back.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked Great campsite with private pitches in the woods so great for shade. Two toilets and two showers and a sink with plenty of hot water. Great few days getting back to nature. Not far from Bridport or Beamister. Very safe and family and dog friendly

Bell tent

Liked We loved our stay at Howard's Wood. We opted to stay in a bell tent to save us putting our own tent up and we were very glad that we did - it was spacious and cosy and the bed was deliciously comfortable. Our pitch felt absolutely secluded and came with a pair of camping chairs, a firepit and, best of all, a little adjoining glade with a hammock. We loved cooking over our fire and lazing in the hammock watching the sky through the leaves of the lovely trees.
The showers were no distance away and were warm and powerful.
We recieved such a kind welcome.
This was our first visit to Howard's Wood but it certainly won't be our last.

Local attractions

Dorset packs a mighty historical punch, and there are several Iron Age sites to see locally. Hike up to the fort at Rawlsbury Camp (50 minutes) for spectacular views over Bulbarrow Hill and Blackmore Vale, or glimpse the sea from the top of the burial mounds at Eggardon Hill Fort (25 minutes). Time-travel forward to Saxon times to see the National Trust-owned Cerne Giant (35 minutes’ drive) etched into the chalk hillside above thatched Cerne Abbas village (half an hour). A day on a Jurassic Coast beach may be in the sightseeing schedule too; choices include the fossil hub of Dorset at Charmouth (25 minutes) or the soft sandy town beach at popular Lyme Regis (half an hour). Heading east, Seatown Beach (20 minutes) is a quiet shingle spot for solitary walks, while trips to the West Dorset Heritage Coast repay with scenic hikes along Chesil Beach (40 minutes) and the chance to feed the swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (35 minutes). If you’d rather stay closer to home base, tour the orchards and taste a drop or two of local scrumpy at Dorset Nectar Cider (five minutes), and if the kids have been well behaved, reward them with cuddly donkey encounters at Donkey Walking Adventures (10 minutes).
