Fen Farm Caravan and Camping Site: Hedges separating the pitches

General

  • Quiet family-friendly Mersea Island site, family-run since 1923
  • Wildlife haven, woodland walks, games field and two play areas
  • Close to the beach and with a pub a few minutes' walk away

There are many special things about award-wining Fen Farm, points out its friendly family team… and you'll see just how many when you arrive to pitch up.

This peaceful and family-friendly site on Essex's Mersea Island is five minutes' walk from the beach and surrounded by scenic fields making up a wildlife haven for local critters and plants. Pitches are properly spacious and there's loads of room to spread out with your kit, whether you're pitching up with friends or just want your own privacy.

Fen Farm is a place for those who shudder at the thought of noisy and flashy clubhouses and who are looking for a quiet retreat in the countryside. It has two play areas, a field for rounders and cricket, and a woodland area for hide and seek to keep you entertained… or you could go wildlife watching with the kids around the site, at the country park next door, or at the nature reserve within a mile and a half.

A pub is a few minutes' walk away and a shop is next to the site. Bigger shops as well as takeaways and famed seafood restaurants are 10 minutes' drive away in West Mersea.

This is my 3rd visit to this site and previously I've given it 5 stars. It's a lovely site, friendly helpful wardens, flat, clean, near the beach, excellent dog park so what's not to like?

    Disliked:

The ridiculous stance they've taken with their interpretation of government regulations 're showers. They have closed all showers including dog and outside one! No other campsite I have been on this year has done this. They were contacted several times about this before the time but refused to change the policy, by which time I had paid and other sites were full. Such a disappointment.

We have just returned from a two night stay with our touring caravan, our first time to fen farm.
A very clean and inviting site, big pitches with easy access to all amenities, we was pitched next to a lovely little park that kept the young kids busy, a short walk to nearby East Mersea beach ( which is also dog friendly ), easy access to a local family pub. Friendly and helpful staff will definitely be coming back.

This was our first time caravanIng and Fen Farm was the best site we could of gone to. The staff were fantastic! They were friendly and always there to help making everything stress free. The pitch’s are big making it easy for the inexperienced driver to park and giving us loads of room to muddle through setting up awnings etc ( eventually completed thanks to the common sense advice offered from one of the rangers). The site itself was immaculate, the toilet and shower facilities were the cleanest I’ve ever seen. The surroundings themselves were beautiful, the beach a few minutes walk and the country park just along the coast line. I can’t describe the magic of this place but technology was abandoned by my screen addicted grandchildren ( 9 and 11yrs) and they ran free. They played as kids used to play, they made full use of the play area made friends and even talked to each other! They occupied themselves for hours along the beach exploring searching for sharks teeth etc ( we did find a tiny one). There was a storm most of Saturday but we spent a lovely afternoon in our caravan just watching out as the wind fought with the sea, just chilling, chatting and playing card games which to be honest was priceless!
It was unfortunate that the weather during our weekend wasn’t great, there was so much more we could of done but I guess that gives us all the more reason to return!

    Disliked:

Just a personal thing really and not a fault with the place at all. But there was a radio station played in the toilet/shower block which was great during the day. Having a overactive imagination however it did make me feel a little vulnerable when I had to go during the night in the sense of not being able to hear anything above the sound of it or be heard if need be.

Local attractions

Mersea Island's a spectacular little place to roam around and to use as a base for venturing around the Essex and East Anglican coast: spend your whole hol here or alternative beach and nature days with sightseeing in Colchester 25 minutes' drive north.

The country park next door is Cudmore Grove, on Mersea's eastern side. This a top spot for family days, with a beach, grassland, meadows and a coastal-themed play area all on a 102-acre site that's crammed with history too: look out for World War II pillboxes and gun emplacements as well as the remains of the 16th-century fort.

And did you know, vino fans, that Mersea has a vineyard? Have a tour of the family-owned vineyard and brewery in Rewshall's Lane on the east of the island, before a taster of its wines and ales then a cream tea, lunch or another wine/ale at the tearoom.

Round off your stay with a look at the history of this handsome and ancient isle at the Mersea Island Museum (15 minutes' drive), telling the tale of local fishing, oystercatching and boat building.
