  • Quiet family-friendly Mersea Island site, family-run since 1923
  • Wildlife haven, woodland walks, games field and two play areas
  • Close to the beach and with a pub a few minutes' walk away
There are many special things about award-wining Fen Farm Caravan and Camping Site, points out its friendly family team… and you'll see just how many when you arrive to pitch up. This peaceful and family-friendly site on Essex's Mersea Island is five minutes' walk from the beach and surrounded by scenic fields making up a wildlife haven for local critters and plants. Pitches are properly spacious and there's loads of room to spread out with your kit, whether you're pitching up with friends or just want your own privacy. Fen Farm is a place for those who shudder at the thought of noisy and flashy clubhouses and who are looking for a quiet retreat in the countryside. It has two play areas, a field for rounders and cricket, and a woodland area for hide and seek to keep you entertained… or you could go wildlife watching with the kids around the site, at the country park next door, or at the nature reserve within a mile and a half. A pub is a few minutes' walk away and a shop is next to the site. Bigger shops as well as takeaways and famed seafood restaurants are 10 minutes' drive away in West Mersea.

Local attractions

Mersea Island's a spectacular little place to roam around and to use as a base for venturing around the Essex and East Anglia coast: spend your whole hol here or alternative beach and nature days with sightseeing in Colchester 25 minutes' drive north. The country park next door is Cudmore Grove, on Mersea's eastern side. This a top spot for family days, with a beach, grassland, meadows and a coastal-themed play area all on a 102-acre site that's crammed with history too: look out for World War II pillboxes and gun emplacements as well as the remains of the 16th-century fort. And did you know, vino fans, that Mersea has a vineyard? Have a tour of the family-owned vineyard and brewery in Rewshall's Lane on the east of the island, before a taster of its wines and ales then a cream tea, lunch or another wine/ale at the tearoom. Round off your stay with a look at the history of this handsome and ancient isle at the Mersea Island Museum (15 minutes' drive), telling the tale of local fishing, oystercatching and boat building.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Lovely camp site with well spaced pitches. Plenty of land to walk the dogs and let them of the lead, the coastline and a pub are a five minute walk away. Walk a bit further down the coast and you get to Cudmore Grove Country Park which is also well worth a visit.
The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, the warden in particular was superb, helping us to fix our jockey wheel that came off upon arrival.
The facilities are well maintained and provide everything you could need.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Great welcome, spacious pitches, and lots of facilities. Amazing cafe/farm shop 10 minute walk away
The dog wash is an amazing feature, especailly after being at the beach as the salt water can make their skin very dry.

Disliked: Showers stay on for such a short time before you have to press the button again, would be good if this was longer so its easier to shower.
