  • Quiet family-friendly pop-up site in the Lake District National Park
  • Derwentwater 10 minutes’ walk; Keswick shops five minutes’ drive
  • Activity centre next door and River Greta strolls from the pitches
A handy five minutes’ drive from Keswick shops, tearooms and pubs in the Lake District National Park, the spacious pitches at Keswick Camping sit on a well-maintained, level grass field. You’ll certainly have plenty to do there, what with the activity centre on site, tennis courts within 10 minutes’ walk and a local golf course (10 minutes’ drive) nearby too. This pop-up site is set up for peace-loving outdoorsy types and families, so if you’re looking for rowdy late nights it’s just not the place for you. The camping field has room for kicking a ball around with the kids, and you can soon be out in the countryside to give any dogs a stretch of their paws. Alternatively, you can have a quiet ramble into Keswick along the River Greta, which runs alongside the pitches. As befits its back-to-nature, adventure camping vibe, there are few facilities – no electric hook-ups, showers or cooking facilities – but there are spotless separate loos for men and women, and standing water taps around the perimeter of the field. If you need to stock up on basics, there’s a small supermarket within five minutes’ stroll; anything else you should be able to source in Keswick. Need sightseeing inspiration? Keswick Information Centre (five minutes) has got you covered.

What customers say

Great spot near Keswick town. Clean loos! Good value, but no showers/washing-up. Some noise & spacing issues, but management's working on it. Gravel makes pegging tough.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Distance to Keswick was perfect for being able to walk into town. And it had a spot available when we needed it last minute on the bank holiday when everywhere else was booked. It is what the picture suggests, just essentially a big fenced in field on the outskirts of the town. For what we wanted it was perfect (and overnight flying visit) but I wouldn't have wanted to be spending my evenings there.

Disliked The price. For what it was it was incredibly expensive. There was noone onsite which meant that people playing music way into the night (3am) weren't asked to be quiet, there was noone enforcing parking efficiently so there wasn't anywhere near enough room for the cars trying to park there. The toilets were not clean, no sanitary bins in the womens and so someone had just been leaving used sanitary pads on the floors. I'd probably have been happy paying £15 for it.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Located near to Keswick town centre, local spar nearby and not a massive campsite so mostly peaceful

Disliked Car parking generally a bit limited, we got there early so we were ok. Good if you want to park and leave your car, may be more difficult to get re parked if you are using your car to get about and about

Emma M. 1 review

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Easy walking distance to Keswick town centre, Fitz Park, and various river & woodland walks. Dog friendly with sensible rules applying. Good car parking area separate from tent pitching field. Toilet and sinks/vanity mirrors ideal and well maintained. Lack of showers not a problem for the small number of days stay.

Disliked Only problem was difficulty finding the site. Signage at entrance from town direction good, but wasn't visible from the A66 into town direction. If the website were to say the campsite is tucked in behind Denton House that would have been a feature to look out for. No other suggestions, as it was a fantastic find!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Great location & plenty of space. Toilets kept clean as well although I can imagine 3 cubicles wouldn’t be enough during peak times

Disliked A bit confusing when you first arrive as no where to “check in”. Phone number on banner as you arrive though so any issues there is someone easily contactable

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Toilet blocks were okay despite the lack of hand soap.
The campsite was a nice distance from town.

Disliked Unfortunately, we didn't have a great experience in this campsite due to a number of factors. We found the campsite extremely rowdy, full of guests being extremely loud and intoxicated, while lighting fires and smoking throughout the night. The bins were constantly overflowing and scattering trash around the campsite and the toilets blocks didn't have any hand soap available either.
Despite paying a fair amount to pitch up, nobody came to check if we had actually booked a spot.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Easy walking distance to Keswick.
Felt safe.
Toilets were proper toilets/sinks.

Disliked Very difficult to gets tent pegs into the ground. I think there was gravel underneath 2 inches of grass. Everyone had their pegs half out.
Soap had ran out in the toilets during our stay.
It is fairly small which meant you can hear everyone throughout the night. Including cars driving across the grass.

From the manager: Hi,

Thank you for your review.

We are really pleased you enjoyed the location, nearby walks, and found the team friendly and the site good value.

We are sorry to hear that the experience was affected by noise and behaviour from other guests. This is certainly not the standard we aim to provide, especially for families and we take these comments very seriously. We do have site rules in place regarding noise and conduct, and we will be reinforcing these to help ensure all guests can enjoy a safe and peaceful stay.

Your feedback regarding vehicle access on the grass is also appreciated. We understand your concerns about space and impact on the camping area, and this will be reviewed as part of our ongoing site management.

We are sorry that this affected your overall impression, as we agree it is a great spot for camping and walks, and we want every guest to have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Thank you again for your honest feedback and it genuinely helps us improve.

Kind regards,
Keswick Camping Team

Local attractions

If you’re looking for lots of outdoor adventure, well, you’re in the right place. Derwentwater is close at hand for sailing, kayaking or paddleboarding on the water, and you can book lake cruises on wooden craft from the Keswick Launch Ticket Office (both 10 minutes’ drive). Further afield, hike up Skiddaw or Blencathra (both 15 minutes) for peerless views over Derwentwater and Scafell Pike. If you hit a rainy day, keep up with your exercise regime on the indoor facilities at Keswick Climbing Wall-Rookery Woods (five minutes), where you can also enrol in ghyll-scrambling jaunts when the weather clears. To soak up a bit of ancient local culture, check out the haunting, 5,000-year-old Castlerigg Stone Circle (five minutes), backed by fells and especially atmospheric at sunset. You can also learn about local industrial history at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum (10 minutes), where you can tour a copper mine and take a vintage steam train ride on the narrow-gauge line running between Threlkeld and Keswick.
