General

  • Fish in five well-stocked on-site lakes
  • Pitches with lakeside views
  • Newly installed showers and toilets with good disabled access

Fishing in East Anglia should sound pretty perfect to angling types. Serious fisherfolk seeking a fishing holiday in Norfolk should give serious consideration to Narborough Fisheries, on its own private 16-acre site to the west of the county and with fishing lakes flowing with chalk stream water from the River Nar.

Narborough Fisheries has five lakes available to guests: trout lakes Willow and Meadow; specimen carp lake Millers (an 11-pounder was landed here in 2014); general coarse lake Foresters, and the newly created match and coarse Ashford Lake filled with over 9, 000 fish.

Fishing pitches at Narborough are set along two of the lakes with pretty perfect lakeside views. The shower and toilet block was fully updated in 2014 and like the rest of the site is kept to high standards; the Narborough owners have also added a small tackle shop on site selling drinks, sweets and other essentials. Just remember to bring your Environment Agency rod licence.

Wc/Shower Facilities spotless. Site spotless, very friendly owners/staff & most Campers. Caught many different sizes/species fish. Gate is usually locked at night time makes you feel safe. Swaffam is close by. Small Market Saturday. Swaffam Kebabs is amazing & delivered right to our pitch with online ordering Cash/Card with Gloves/Masks & also the Chinese just outside is amazing delivered with Mask/Gloves on, but this has always been lovely. Small Asda not far. But also an Aldi 20 mins away.

    Disliked:

Fishing is very busy on a Tuesday Cars pulling on site 8am literally unloading outside your personal space. Pitches are very close to the road, so Fishing Rods sticking out in road/umbrellas, Caravan towing bars sticking out too. we are always further up on the site, which was confirmed first but then told we where swapped to a further away pitch (because of a larger Caravan) before arrival & felt we had been shoved down the end as we had an old trailer tent. All the nicer units are now up the other end, we felt let down, especially after being regular customers for a few years now. The Jets from Marham are so noisy, until 11pm some nights. We don’t like the fact that Camping price is per night £30.00 (fair enough) then extra for fishing (when you are Camping, we got a small discount as our son struggles to fish all day due to personal circumstances). So this is working out £43/45/50 per night depending on which lakes you fish. Speaking to some of the daily fisherman, (they didn’t even realise fishing was extra for Campers). There was also a lot of noise like Cranes or some works going on close by. We have been many times before and it has always been an enjoyable stay. But we didn’t enjoy our stay this time & couldn’t wait to get home to be honest, as we live in peaceful Countryside away from noise. (So we probably noticed it a bit more, but anyhow it was not enjoyable & we where very tired). Really painful stones under your feet in awning. Trip hazards too as they are not absolutely level. Our neighbours Pitch 5 where very rude! & they both thought they owned the site to be honest! Just turn up unloading which took 3 hrs his saying “move your car because my dogs are going in the road”, when they where tied close to the road near the lake in the first instance, because of passing Cars, he said “my dogs are going to get run over” he tutted & moaned about bbq, then when we where packing up, the Car was sideways on & they both moaned at us & made our stay just awful, so not sure we will be going back to be honest! (This part is not the owners fault but thought they should know that the other Campers think they own the place & are upsetting their regular Campers)! I’m not sure we feel we will visit again, we really used to love it but we just couldn’t wait to get home to be honest so tired from all the noise going on.

The place was quite picturesque and well kept. We didn’t use the toilet facilities because of the covid situation so cannot comment on that.

Most of the staff seemed friendly as did the visitors. Chinese within walking distance had really lovely food.

    Reason for the 2 star

We booked this long weekend break at least 4 weeks beforehand. We travelled a round trip of 170 miles to come to Narborough Lakes, looking forward to the fishing on the biggest lake, being a keen fisherman.

When we arrived we were told that the big lake had been hired out on the Saturday, so could only fish on the Sunday. At the time I didn’t mind much as spent the Saturday with my young son on the small lake, having bought a £9 ticket for me and a £7 ticket for him.

I tried then to purchase a ticket for me for the Sunday for the bigger lake, only to be told the whole lake had been rehired for the same group of lads as they wanted to stay another night.

On booking my pitch I did ask if that includes the fishing and said I wanted to book onto the bigger carp lake. The lady did advise me that there is no pre booking and I need to book on arrival. I phoned 2 days before arrival and they still said I could not prebook.

When I complained that the lake had now been prebooked by the group of lads a month before, I was told by the owner to talk to the group to ask if they would allow me to join them (what a joke,). They had obviously been allowed to precooked and it was not their fault or down to me to ask them permission.

We left the following morning and went elsewhere.

I left very disappointed as had waisted mine and my families time and also the fuel and packing of fishing equipment that wasn’t needed

We’ were refunded for the following night as we decided to leave as he did understand our reasoning, but that doesn’t make up for our time wasted and our disappointment.

Stunning location and extremely peaceful. This was our very first trip as new caravan owners, and we couldn’t have asked for more.
The facilities were spotless and we even bumped into the extremely pleasant owner. Thank you for a wonderful weekend break and we’re already planning our next stay there.

    Disliked:

Didn’t seem overly clear that you had to park up before driving down to the reception hut. Consequently I drove down to the hut (about 75metres) and then had to try and turn around.

We are situated just off the A47 (signed Narborough Trout Lakes), half way between King's Lynn and Swaffham. Once turned off the main road, follow the road and a large green fishery sign is easily visible from the road. Turn into the site and bear to the left and park. Please walk up to reception to retrieve your pitch details on arrival.

Local attractions

Fishing, fishing, nature reserves, the north Norfolk coastline and watery sports: what a lot of activities there are to catch in this part of East Anglia.

King's Lynn about nine miles away has several fisheries owned or managed by the King's Lynn Angling Association to cast off for carp, zander, bream, roach, perch and pike along the Great Ouse and other watery locations; access some via Magdalen Bridge, Ten Mile Bank, Downham Market and Denver Sluice among many others.

Away from the rod, take the budget-friendly local bus from Narborough village east to comely Norwich for a day among its Lanes and historic market for shopping, and a look at as many as possible of the Norwich 12, the city's historic buildings, as can possibly be fitted in on a day trip. (If you only have time for a couple, the obvious two are Norman Norwich Castle, which includes the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, and Norwich Cathedral with its rather splendid large cloisters.)

Going west, pick the cathedral city of Peterborough for another day trip: alongside its twelfth century cathedral we'd also recommend a potter among the quarter of a million or so exhibits of the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, watersports on the lakes at Nene Park, a puff on the Nene Valley Railway between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction, and a night out at the Key Theatre, where shows of all sorts run all year.

Also get hooked on the wildlife and sumptuous scenery in the area, with a trip to the nearest nature reserve, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust's chalk grassland of Narborough Railway Line, or a wildlife-spotting float around the Norfolk Broads, easily accessible from Norwich.
