Walnut Tree Meadow Camping: Space for large tents

General

  • Dog-friendly farm site a mile from the centre of Wymondham
  • A 20-minute drive from Norwich; half an hour from the Norfolk Broads
  • Café, small farm shop, dog groomer, dog pool and alpaca walks on site

Walnut Tree Meadow Camping is a rural Norfolk site around five minutes’ drive from the centre of Wymondham and 20 minutes from Norwich (with easy access via the nearby A11).

There’s much to appreciate at this relaxed getaway spot, especially for folk travelling with a dog. As it’s in the grounds of a canine business, the facilities for canines on hols are particularly fine: book your four-legged pal in for a spot of pampering with the resident groomer or join one of the numerous classes available (dog first aid, agility sessions and canine massage are often among the offerings). For walkies, you can either book a session on the two-acre fully-fenced dog walking meadow or hit the local footpaths for a country stroll.

Bringing a dog isn’t compulsory, and there are plenty of other creatures to get to know on site: take an alpaca for a walk, make friends with pygmy goats and feed chickens (or lambs if you’re here at the right time…) Once you’ve met the whole gang, sit back and get set for one of the stunning sunsets that often dazzle guests here.

Facilities on site include a café (dog-friendly, of course), and a hot water washing-up area. Picnic benches, charcoal barbecue and firepits are available (first come, first served), and you can buy charcoal on site. Pitches have no boundaries, so lay claim to as much space as you wish; wherever you pick, you’ll have access to a large hot shower and toilet facilities. Book yourself a cooked breakfast on your first morning by calling the farm café in advance.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (excluding couples) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Small site with only a few other pitches.

The toilets could use slightly stronger lights.
A little play frame or swings would be lovely, however the kids did keep busy in other ways.

    Disliked:

No drinking water on camping field. Needs hot water in toilets in field as quite a way to back of cafe for other toilet with hot water. Mirror would also be useful This is also where shower is. Disabled daughter, sight impaired, poor lighting also Inc washing up area. Uneven stones on walk to shower and toilet. Expensive for facilities on offer.

Everything!!! We had an amazing stay. Our pitch was perfect, close to toilet and water. We looked onto a field of sheep, lambs and goats. Everything was spotlessly clean. The shower was absolutely perfect, really good hot shower. The cafe served the absolute best gourmet burger under the disguise of just a burger. It was amazing. Breakfast too. You cannot get better. All local. The whole place is doggie friendly, even the cafe which has lots of treats for your four legged companion. When we let our dog out in the morning she ran to get to the cafe. There are safe enclosed fields, one to hire or a communal field for free. Agility field you can hire for an amazing price of £16, dip and dive too. There are alpacas in a field too that you can book to take for a walk. All in all a perfect place to stay. Everyone is extremely friendly and very helpful. Thank you for making our stay a happy one. We will return with my mum!

Absolutely loved our stay, we are newbies at camper van holidays, this was our first journey out. Campsite lovely, clean and quiet, perfect for the dog. Toilets, showers and washing up areas were spotless. We booked this for a place we could take and walk the dog, he was in his element, allowed off lead, went swimming in the dip and dive doggy pool (has to be booked, cost £15 for 30 minutes, we’ll worth every penny). Surrounded by sheep, baby lambs, goats and alpacas. Tea room, offering breakfast rolls etc, lunch, afternoon teas can be booked.
Really couldn’t fault this camp site at all. We will definitely be returning.

Great dog friendly campsite. Loads of open space for the kids and dogs to run around. Nice, clean shower and toilet facilities. We loved the extra activities on site for Easter such as the Easter trail and craft activities for kids. The dog friendly cafe is great and we loved the pupcakes. :-)

    Disliked:

It would have been nice if the cafe opened slightly earlier when lots of people are staying on site as we would have had breakfast there, but 10am was too late for us.

Local attractions

Flick through the history books… the two towers of the Benedictine Wymondham Abbey (five minutes' drive) aren’t hard to spot from afar and inside, there’s fab architecture. For other trips back to times that have passed, you could travel along the Mid Norfolk Railway (five minutes) or nosy around Norwich (20 minutes) to look at the cathedral, castle, market and Bridewell Museum.

For activities that will take you to the trees, Thetford Forest Park (35 minutes) is all about those peaceful forest walks, picnics by the river and for those more adventurous types, Go Ape Thetford (40 minutes) will give you a birds’ eye view of the forest from the obstacle course and zipwires in the treetops.

Whether you’re a big kid or you’ve got ones of your own, there’s plenty in the way of more family-friendly activities around these parts. Perhaps a zoo day at Banham Zoo (25 minutes) or catching a show at the Norfolk Showground (15 minutes)? Boating on the Norfolk Broads (half an hour) or daring to go on the dinosaur-themed rides at Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure (25 minutes)?
