Avon Wild Camping: Bell tent with seating, table and fire pit

General

  • Pick your own pitch at a 12-acre site on the banks of the River Avon
  • Warwick Castle and Royal Leamington Spa within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing on site (for an extra charge); farm shop/café a mile away

There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa.

There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended.

All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back to basics site there are no electric hookups or showers, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rain water, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on wizzing down the zipwire or playing on the rope swing by the river.

Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Please don't forget to bring drinking water, as there is no running water onsite.

Please note there are only four toilets onsite.

    We enjoyed our stay here.
The site was well looked after and very clean.
The staff was lovely people who stayed at site were also friendly .
    The toilet area always clean.
Kids loved the play area where they have swing, also lovely lake near by where we could also see some horses. Kids loved spending night here, we also got fire pit that was free on site and we enjoyed using it for burning our marshmallow and melted chocolate. Have say such perfect little get away for family times and making memories, and we will 100% be coming back here again. Thankyou for making such lovely clean friendly camp site

    Can't say anything I disliked.

Other than I do reccoment a area for smaller children.

Maybe a slide or smaller safer swing for smaller kids age from 2 to maybe 5yrs, or a climbing frame.

Toilets were good, clean and practical.
Campsite itself was nice, large and on the river.
Relaxed atmosphere whilst everyone was still respectful. Great location just outside of coventry but it still feels remote enough. The site manager was kind enough to lend us her firepit when the communal ones had run out.

This is a lovely location with a really friendly and accommodating host.

The campsite is a large field and you pitch where you like. There are numerous spots near the river and there is plenty of space. The toilets are clean and comfortable. We heard little owls calling and there were numerous interesting birds flying overhead.

I particularly liked the crowd, which is quite diverse and very friendly.

Local attractions

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course.

For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural.

If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Stoneleigh Abbey (2.8 kilometres)
  • Herbert Art Gallery & Museum (6.6 kilometres)
  • Royal Pump Rooms (6.6 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Baddesley Clinton (14.5 kilometres)
  • Packwood House (17.0 kilometres)
