Amazing location, ideal proximity to Clough…

Sept 2026

Liked Amazing location, ideal proximity to Clough Head, Blencathra, and Skiddaw too, with a direct footpath to Keswick via the old railway. Perfect! The on-site shop was open for a good amount of time and had a good range of quality stuff. Great clean level and easy to work pitches.

Disliked Lack of WiFi.

Great little campsite for a base to explore the Roaches.

Sept 2022

Liked Best view of the roaches and Hen cloud you could ask for. Nice flat pitch and well kept grass. Nice farm shop on site with fire pits and wood for sale and meats to cook over the fire. Less than a mile away from The Three Horseshoes Inn which does ace food for a windy rainy night after a day's hike about the area. Definitely within walking distance and a great loop I did from here to Hen's cloud, The Roaches, then Lud's church and back.

Good back to basics site with friendly owner and ideal location

Apr 2022

Liked Incredible location, just at the foot of Winnat's pass, Mam Tor, and a bunch of different caves. My friends and I used Treak Pringle as a base to do a hike over Hollins cross and up Kinder plateau and around the top back to Mam Tor. Lots of clean toilets, water, and space. The honesty box was also a nice touch which accepts bank transfers as well as cash.

Disliked Unfortunately the ground was lumpy, sloped, and the resident cows and sheep were audible throughout the night. It was also a shame that there were no fire pits/fire supplies available to buy on site. That being said these are all things forewarned in the site description, but I wanted to emphasise them nonetheless.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and the positive likes. Apologies for the noise from the cows and the neighbours sheep but we are in the countryside and can not be helped.

Back to basics campsite near with good local walks

Mar 2022

Liked Great remote location down a gravel/rubble road, far away from any other settlements, but still enjoyable views over nearby villages at night thanks to the elevation. Good walks available nearby when looking at OS maps for this area, including walks down into Deep Dale and Wye Dale. VERY reasonable price at £10 for one night for my tent and my bike.

Disliked One minor grievance was that the shower and toilet was in the same cubicle, so (although kept clean and tidy) when it is as busy at it was when I visited (roughly 20 tents) expect to be waiting a while for the loo or shower.

Great location as base for a holiday walking in the peaks. Clean.

Jan 2022

Liked Brilliant location for hiking: near the start/end of Pennine way, Grindslow Clough ascent to Kinder Scout plateau, and the Old Naggs Head for food after a day of walking. Big emphasis on this point! Also very fast and far reaching WiFi, which spreads across the whole of the field for tent/car pitches. Kirsty was very accommodating for my late arrival and was happy to make arrangements to ensure I had a fire pit with wood and firestarting kit, essential for a chilly January camp. Toilets/wash basins/water sources were clean and well maintained. I also liked that this site is open when others weren't, especially as Winter is a great time to experience popular routes without lots of people.

Disliked There was no enforcement of the 10 pm noise rule, so on my last night from 9.30 pm - 4.30 am (when I left) someone in the Grouse field was playing loud reggae music, making sleeping more difficult. This is a shame as escaping noise/people was exactly what I came for and put a bad tint on an otherwise very peaceful stay. Also the pricing at £20 per night, with £10 rental of firepit per night, is very very steep, but somewhat offset by the unbeatable location for Kinder Scout walks. I can't recommend this site to my more budget-orientated thru-hiker friends because of this, but I would recommend this site generally and will visit again.

Quiet, back-to-basics Fen site with clean facilities in a great spot

Sept 2021

Liked Loved the back to basics feel of the site, small field enclosed by trees with patches of wildflowers, and a small wood at the end of the field (great for finding that much needed long stick for getting pots off the fire). Uncannily clean facilities (water, wash basins, toilets, showers) was much appreciated after the day's hike, and portable fire pits paired nicely with the free-to-pitch approach of the site allowing me to chose where I pitched - a feature much appreciated. Location is the best feature for me, with the site being located between Ouse fen and Fen Drayton lakes. Also worth mentioning was the owl hooting heard throughout the night!

Disliked At a push, maybe provide more tinder in the firestarter kit. I start my fires with straw/birch bark and ferrocenium rod as a backpacker, so I struggled initially to keep a fire sustained enough to light the logs. This is a very nit-picky criticism though, as overall my experience was 10/10.
