- Wild camping on a horse and cattle ranch near Wilson, North Carolina
- A five-minute drive to Bridgersville; 10 minutes to It’s A Zoo Life
- No-frills grass sites on 90 acres of pasture with grazing animals
Down a long gravel driveway near Elm City in North Carolina sits Cavvietta, a rural spot for off-grid wild camping on a working horse and cattle ranch that doubles as an events venue and equestrian centre. Here you can catch the sunrise over the riding arena, take a walk up the drive and enjoy seeing the animals grazing, the dogs playing and the chickens scratching for food.
Simple grass pitches offer few facilities – please note there’s no running water and no electricity but portable toilets are available – and ample compensation comes in the expanse of farmland you have to explore around the camping field.
If you want to head off a little further afield, Strickland Pond (10 minutes’ drive) offers anglers the chance to cast for catfish and bass, while cycling families can try their hands at gentle forest trails at Bicycle Post Mountain Bike Trails (15 minutes).
Back at base, barbecues and campfires are allowed, and you can spark up the grill with provisions from the handy store in Bridgersville (five minutes). For major stocking-up needs, head for Wilson (15 minutes), which also has a couple of informal steakhouses, taco restaurants and grill bars.
