- A 25-minute drive to Greers Ferry Lake and Sugar Loaf Mountain trail
- Restaurants, mountain biking trails and golf within 10 minutes' drive
All set for a primitive stay in the Fairfield Bay area in Arkansas? Hillbilly Hippie Hideaway has just the spot for a back to basics break. Privacy is the name of the game at this dog-friendly site. In fact, it’s so spacious that most of the time, you’ll have acres of space to yourself.
This is certainly a place for outdoors fans, whether you get stuck into hiking the many local trails, mountain biking, watersports or hang-gliding. Hillbilly Hippie Hideaway is 25 minutes’ drive from the 40,000-acre Greers Ferry Lake, which is dotted with islands and walking trails, and 15 minutes’ drive the Middle Fork Little Red River. Paddle the river or the lake – your choice.
If you’d rather stick to the dry land, there are 90 miles of ATV and UTV trails starting from Adventure Trails, 10 minutes’ drive away. The site also organises a bunch of outdoor activities too, including canoeing and kayak rental, sailboat rental and land sail rental.
Kids might like the miniature golf course or the swimming pool at the Cool Pool Café (both 10 minutes’ drive). As for days teeing off, there’s also a great golf course five minutes’ drive away from the site. There are heaps of restaurants in Fairfield Bay within five to 10 minutes’ drive if the activities get your stomach rumbling.

Local attractions
Here for the hikes? Make your way to the Indian Rock Cave & Trail (10 minutes’ drive) for a fairly easy trail past a historic log cabin and cool rock formations. Other easy-going and incredibly scenic trails include the Collins Creek Trailhead (40 minutes) and the Mossy Bluff National Nature Trail (45 minutes) through woods with views of the river and dam.
Those should be a good warm-up for the more challenging Sugar Loaf Mountain National Nature Trail (25 minutes), which has gorgeous views over the lake and great birdwatching spots. Or perhaps you’d rather chill out and swim at Sandy Beach (45 minutes) on Greers Ferry Lake or from the Devils Fork Recreation Area (15 minutes), which also has boat ramps.
The South Fork Nature Center (40 minutes) has more wildlife trails, yet again, and a natural history museum with a marine tank, butterfly garden and wildflower garden.
