  • Wilderness campground surrounded by forest, 10 miles from Merrill
  • A 20-minute drive to Underdown Recreation Area; 50 to Ice Age Trail
  • Secluded forest sites, with lake views, wooded hills, and fishing
Deep in the backwoods of rural Wisconsin, Camp Escape is a fab spot to disconnect with the 21st century and get completely off grid. At this site, a handful of secluded pitches each come with spectacular lakeside views and shelter from pine trees for complete isolation. Here’s a chance to test your wilderness skills. There’s 70 acres of private forest and four kettle lakes at your disposal, so getting to know your surroundings must be top of the list. You can potter around on the water in rowing boats and canoes (both free for guests to use) and fish for bass to grill over your campfire. Kids can safely run off energy, make new friends at the play areas, or go scavenging for raspberries in season. Beyond the site boundaries, there’s a whole wilderness of 5,000 acres just begging to be explored; take a backpack and hike or ride horses into the forest, or rent an ATV or snowmobile for winter adventures in the hills. At the end of the day, though, there’s probably nothing better than sitting on a wooden dock overlooking a lake and contemplating the wilderness as the sun sets. No-fuss amenities at this back-to-nature site include firepits, wooden tables and parking by each site. Gas cylinders are available, but there’s no drinking water so you'll need to bring your own. There’s one compostable toilet on the site as well as plenty of dirt (and trees to hide behind) for catholes.

Local attractions

A vast network of trails snakes its way around the campsite, so grab your walking boots and backpack for wilderness adventures in Lincoln County’s Underdown Recreation Area (20 minutes’ drive). Some sections of the Ice Age Trail (50 minutes) are spot on for kids, like the path up to Grandfather Falls, and there’s plenty of challenging hiking too. Your days out don’t have to be on foot. Rent a mountain bike, discover the forest on a horseback ride, or paddle a canoe down river in George W. Mead State Wildlife Area (an hour). Logger's Landing Indoor Waterpark (half an hour) is a good alternative if you need something that's not weather-dependent. Need to feed up for these adventures? Check out the local food with visits to Northwood Maple Farm (25 minutes) and Helen's Hilltop Orchard (25 minutes), or stop in for refreshing beers from the Sawmill Brewing Company (15 minutes).
