Verdant, peaceful and welcoming are three words used a lot to sum up the Balabanaga Ciftligi Camping experience. Set in a tree-lined meadow adjoining a 400-year-old farmhouse, and with a backdrop of forest-clad Anatolian mountains all around, this rural campsite is run by attentive owners who are happy to go that extra mile to help their guests. Firepits are available if you’d care to spark up a barbecue – source bits for the grill from the local shops in Daday (five minutes’ drive) – and if you’re not feeling the urge to cook, well, that's fine too. Right next to the camping field there’s a casual alfresco restaurant where you can graze on regional breakfasts and locally produced specialities under trees in the apple orchard. After dark, all is quiet and still on site; keep your fingers crossed for a cloudless night so you can watch the stars dancing in the Milky Way far above. As for the practicalities, the spacious grass pitches all have electric hook-ups and a supply of water, and there are modern facilities – including hot showers – on site.

Local attractions

Pack a picnic and set off to explore the shores of Yumurtacı Göleti lake (10 minutes’ drive), or have a hike in the conifer forests of Bezirgan Barajı nature reserve (25 minutes). Make a day of it with a long trek through the fir trees in Ilgaz Mountain National Park (an hour) where walkers can look out for elusive wolves and bears and expert climbers can have a shot at scaling one of the peaks. If you’re visiting in winter, ski gentle pine-lined slopes at Ilgaz Yurduntepe Kayak Merkezi ski centre (an hour and 10 minutes). For a taste of local heritage, marvel at the intricate 14th-century wood carvings on doors, ceilings and galleries at ornate Mahmut Bey Mosque in Kasaba (20 minutes). Head for historic Kastamonu (half an hour) to tour the ramparts of the mighty Byzantine castle atop its craggy cliff, and rest any weary feet over a glass of mint tea at a traditional courtyard café in the surrounding alleyways.
