  • Eco-friendly Asturias family campsite in the Somiedo Natural Park
  • Braña de Mumián 20 minutes’ drive; Prehistoric Park Teverga an hour
  • Bar and café serving local produce; store and petting farm on site
Peaceful Asturias camping next to a river and with mountain views all around catch your fancy? Pack your bags and head for Camping Lagos de Somiedo, surrounded by native vegetation on the outskirts of sleepy Valle de Lago village in the Somiedo Natural Park. The setting of this site, by the Rio del Valle, is pretty spectacular – and it's matched by its pristine modern facilities, which include a bar/cafeteria (with local sausage and cheese boards, sandwiches and pizzas to keep you going throughout the day) and a mini market for anything vital you’ve left at home. You can also spark up the communal barbecue, picnic overlooking the mountains or create your own suppers in the shared kitchen. The campsite’s spotless showers have a reliable supply of hot water, and there is also a tub for any family dogs who’ve got a bit muddy on their walkies. Kids will be happy to know there’s a small petting zoo on site with horses to meet, as well as a playground and organised games. In keeping with the green credentials of this eco-friendly campsite, you can ditch the car to hike out to gorgeous alpine lakes, abandoned villages and wilderness viewpoints, all while looking out for the wildlife of this spectacular corner of Asturias. To get an expert angle on what you’re seeing and where you’re walking, guided tours and workshops can be organised by campsite staff.

Local attractions

You’ll probably spend most of your time here exploring the stunning landscapes of the surrounding Somiedo National Park – and that’s easily done as you can wander straight out onto the trails from the park and/or sign up for guided hikes. If you’d like to explore a little further afield, some of the top spots to head for include Reserva de la Biosfera-Babia (half an hour’s drive), Laciana Valley Nature Preserve (40 minutes) and the wildlife-filled Lago de Calabazosa o Negro (45 minutes). Handy with a camera? Landscape photographers tip Mirador del Príncipe (half an hour) as one of the area’s best viewpoints for great scenery snaps. Dipping into local culture and history on your wishlist too? Start with a wander around the preserved mountain village Braña de Mumián (20 minutes) before a trip to Ecomuseo de Somiedo (half an hour) to learn about how people of the past lived. Stepping a bit further back in time, you can learn all about the cave paintings and join various activities at Prehistoric Park Teverga (an hour): if you're feeling brave, head underground at nearby Cueva Huerta afterwards.
