  • Family yurts in the Catalan Range, half an hour’s drive from Tarragona
  • El Pla de Santa Maria village 10 minutes’ drive; Reus 35 minutes
  • Yoga, flying acrobatics and mindfulness sessions; pool; massages
Prepare to climb, scramble and finally conquer the summit of Tossal Gros, in the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range, when you stay at La Muntanera (literally, ‘the mountaineer’, which is what you might proudly call yourself after your efforts). This peaceful, remote site sits among Mediterranean vegetation on the eastern flank of the peak, about a 10-minute drive from the village of El Pla de Santa Maria. Of course, you might not have such lofty ambitions. That’s okay – there’s plenty to keep you occupied and entertained on site without ever lacing up those hiking boots. In fact, you might decide to spend most of your time here barefoot, whether splashing around in the pool, getting a massage or joining the workshops – yoga classes, flying acrobatics and mindfulness – that take place in a clear geodesic dome with views of the surrounding hills. Speaking of views (and they are spectacular)… You can gaze upon mountains and arable fields from your own yurt, too. Each yurt accommodates up to four guests, and each comes with an attached private bathroom and kitchenette. Keen cooks source their ingredients from El Pla de Santa Maria, which is also where the nearest restaurants are. Powered by a combination of solar and hydro-power, La Muntanera is all about sustainable living. This is a place to really commune with nature, as you stroll among greenery and fruit trees, spotting the local wildlife.

Local attractions

Staying at La Muntanera puts you in the heart of the Tarragona wine region, so be sure to take some time exploring nearby vineyards and cellars – and stocking up on local wines, of course. Celler Mas Vicenç (10 minutes’ drive) runs guided tours of the facilities, as well as tasting experiences and events such as wine and chocolate pairings. Among the Roman ruins in Tarragona (half an hour) are the Circ Romà chariot track, which dates back from the first century, and an amphitheatre with sea views. After buying picnicking supplies at the Central Market, in a modernist building from the 1910s, head to the crescent of golden sand that is Platja del Miracle. Reus (35 minutes) is known as the birthplace of Modernist architect Antoni Gaudí, who has his own museum. The town is renowned for several Art Nouveau buildings displaying elaborate decorative elements. Arguably the most impressive among them is the Casa Navàs, with its ornate balconies and rich, floral-inspired interior.
