  • Small, quiet glamping site one kilometre from a Costa Brava beach
  • Within walking distance of a water park and the Camino de Ronda trail
  • Electric bicycle hire on site; shops and restaurants a short walk away
Does the Costa Brava bring to mind crescent beaches, castles and pine trees? If so, there shouldn’t be too many surprises at Camping Pla de la Torre in Girona. This small, quiet glamping site is a 20-minute walk away from Playa Torre Valentina in Sant Antoni de Calonge, and as well as having a scattering of pine trees, it's within walking or driving distance of bucket loads of typically gorgeous Costa Brava spots… Begin by hiring an electric bicycle on site and pedalling onto the local greenway, perhaps. Alternatively, you could don a pair of hiking boots and set off for a list of Costa Brava beaches along the Camino de Ronda trail on the coast. An inflatable water park is a 25-minute walk away from the site, and there are also padel and tennis courts (with guest discounts) a short walk away. For any snacks or meals out, there are restaurants and supermarkets within a 15- to 20-minute walk of Camping Pla de la Torre. Despite all of these conveniences, it’s peaceful on site, with the pine trees adding plenty of greenery and being easy on the eyes. Any keen divers who decide to glamp at the site can also make their way to the prime Mediterranean seabed at Illes Medes. Diving excursions leave from the marina in L'Estartit, which is around a 35-minute drive away.

Local attractions

There’s plenty within walking distance of Camping Pla de la Torre, whether it's beaches or Castell de Calonge (half an hour’s walk), a castle built in 1019. The courtyard now plays host to concerts and other events throughout the year. If you want somewhere scenic to stretch your legs, try out the Pineda d'en Gori (10 minutes) hiking trail, set along an area of the coast with gorgeous castles and small, unbusy coves such as Cala s'Alguer (15 minutes). When you’re heading back to base, you could pull in at The Fishing Museum (10 minutes) which runs seafood-tasting workshops on occasion. Muntanyes de Begur (20 minutes) has more for hikers. Begur (20 minutes) is also excellent; the old town has a medieval castle and there are also 16th-century defensive towers and colonial architecture (Indies houses) built in the 19th century. Not enough history for you yet? Head to the Iberian town of Ullastret (half an hour), home to a medieval church and ancient Iberian archaeological sites. Montgrí Castle (half an hour) is a hilltop castle from the 13th century with stunning views over the Medes Islands. Girona (40 minutes), of course, also has plenty of history, from the walled Old Quarter to a Roman fortress.
