Supersize your swimming chances by heading to Rubina Resort, a cracking Catalonia site a short stroll from the shores of the Med. Aside from its splendid seaside location, the main star of the show here is the mammoth outdoor pool, where there's 1000m² of space for splashing about. Overlooking this inviting scene is a full-sized gym with separate cardio and weights rooms (if fatigue kicks in on the treadmill, the poolside views may well help get you over the hump). Eats-wise, the grub here is fresh and varied, whether you opt to pick up snacks in the on-site supermarket or sit down for a slap-up meal at the restaurant. The feeling of sand between your toes – fab when watching a blazing sunset barefoot on the beach, less so when it comes home with you – can be done away with if you make a quick detour to the beach showers near the site entrance; there's also a canine version for salty sea dogs. There's a vast array of other practical perks on top of these, including a laundry room, lounge, seasonal kids' club, wifi and snack bar. When you pull yourself away from the creature comforts and entertainment options of Rubina Resort, you'll have plenty to see and do in Empuriabrava, where you can scoot around the town's navigable canals, admire the marina (one of Europe's largest) or treat yourself to a round of miniature golf (all within 15 minutes' walk).

Local attractions

White, spotless, powder-fine… and no, that's not a reference to Empuriabrava's enticing sandy beaches. A few metres from Rubina Resort, Castelló d'Empúries Flour Mill and Eco-Museum has hands-on exhibits about all things to do with traditional flour and bread production. If the rural know-how here inspires you to get out for countryside jaunts, hire a bike in town (there are various hire shops within five minutes' walk) and zoom off to Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature reserve; the trail starts right outside the site entrance. Art fan? You could do far worse than Figueres (25 minutes' drive), home to the Dalí Museum (you really can't miss it – head for the pink castle with enormous eggs where the battlements should be). Girona (45 minutes) is another sterling spot for culture fans, with a handsome hilltop cathedral, Jewish museum and ancient Arab baths complex to its name. Fancy a stint in another seaside town? Cadaqués (30 minutes) on the spectacular Cap de Creus peninsula is a supremely calming spot, where turquoise waves lap against the white waterside houses…

Liked: Fab pool area, laundry and supermarket. Showers and toilets great, plenty hot water, short walk to the beach.

Disliked: Motorhome pitches v small, no privacy, no shade. Not fantastic, new area even worse. Long walk to town centre, no shops or restaurants nearby.

Liked: Nous avons apprécié la proximité de la plage, l'accueil du personnel, la taille des emplacements. La piscine est très jolie. Présence d'une douche pour chiens au retour de la plage. Les enfants se sont régalés sur les aires de jeux proposées. Une aire de jeux se situe à proximité du restaurant, donc les enfants jouent avec leurs copains pendant que nous passons un repas entre adultes, tout en pouvant les surveiller. Les allées sont assez larges pour manœuvrer avec un camping car.

Disliked: toilettes et douches étroits, douches pas toujours très propres. Manque d'arbres pour l'ombre en été.
Wifi payant.

Liked: gesamter Campingplatz sehr schön. Auch der Stellplatz mit
140 m2 sehr sehr schön.

Disliked: Schade, das durch pitchup.com nur Stellplätze von 85 m2 angeboten werden.
Mit unseren Wohnmobil war er leider zu eng und wir konnten den Stellplatz nicht nutzen.
Bei Regen stehen sie alle unter Wasser.

Liked: The friendliness if the regulars there, the pitch sizes and the fully serviced pitch.
Plenty of bins and clean toilets and shower block.
Fresh bread each morning in the shop and lovely dining area & takeaway.
Laundry with plenty of washers and a reasonable price.
