  • Peaceful site in a huge protected Castilian forest
  • Outdoor pool with snack bar, fishing, restaurant, bar and two terraces
  • Excellent for kids with play area and big central play meadow
Off to the Castilian countryside? Settle down at peaceful and shaded Camping El Calonge near Lastras de Cuéllar in the Tierra de Pinares, to be among medieval villages, ancient woodlands and sheltered river valleys – all among the spectacular green scenery of a huge protected forest. It's all near the local town of Lastras de Cuéllar on the northern slope of the province of Segovia, at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level and in a landscape that includes the La Tenca and Carrizal lagoons and the Cega river, for walks, watersports and birdwatching. The hiking, cycling, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking of Duratón River Canyons National Park is about half an hour from the site. Stacks of shaded options are at this relaxed and quiet place, including fishing in the adjoining river or splashing around in the two outdoor pools (one for adults and one for kids) just for starters; after a dip, pick up a light bite from the snack bar to have on the big grassy space by the water. El Calonge is well set up for kids too, with a roomy play area with sandpit among the trees, and central meadow of the site dedicated to small guests, with plenty of space for kids to run about, delve into the huts and tunnels, or play football, badminton or volleyball. A kids' club runs in July and August. There's a dedicated area of the bar-restaurant for children too, where they can whirl about and make new pals while the grownups get on with the important task of investigating the local cuisine and drinks from one of the two terraces with scenic forest views. The hub of the site, the restaurant building also includes board games, a big TV, billiards, table football and darts, newspapers and magazines, a computer with internet access, and a small supermarket selling bread, ice and other essentials.

Local attractions

Several paths into the forest lead from the site or very close by, to explore the forest surroundings by foot or bike. El Calonge's forest setting is a short stroll from the Cega river, for swimming, fishing and paddling, and is within easy reach of the paths and birdwatching centre of the Lagras de Lastras de Cuellar wetlands. This is a well-known land for birdwatching, particularly for the vultures who swoop around the spectacular landscapes of the Duratón River Canyons/ Hoces del Rio Duratón national park just under 30 kilometres away. The canyon cliffs here house one of the biggest colonies of griffon vulture in Europe, along with other raptors including peregrine falcons and eagles: if you fancy viewing falcons, this is the place to be. Some spectacular medieval towns and villages are within driving distance too, such as tiny Fuentidueña, about 20 kilometres by car; Cuéllar (26 kilometres), home to the oldest festival in Spain, the Running of the bulls, and Sepúlveda, next to the Hoces del Rio Duratón National Park. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Segovia, a town famed for its medieval walls, squares, mansions, Romanesque churches, convents, former royal palace and Gothic cathedral, is under 45 minutes away. Within two hours are Valladolid, with its Spanish Gothic San Pablo Church, Royal Palace and Christopher Columbus Museum (80 kilometres) and Madrid, for galleries, museums, parks and palaces, 130 kilometres from the site.
