  • Peaceful Castile y León family campsite on the Camino de Santiago
  • A 10-minute drive to León; San Pedro de Eslonza Monastery, 20 minutes
  • Pine-shaded pitches; two swimming pools and a shop on site
When you’re looking for a peaceful base from which to explore the sprawling province of Castile y León, or needing a few days’ break from walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route, have a peek at Camping Ciudad de León. Tucked into pine forest 10 minutes’ drive away from the spectacular historic city of León, this family-friendly site also has plenty to offer for those days when you don’t want to move far from your tree-shaded pitch. As well as a playground for younger kids, there’s one outdoor pool for adults and a smaller one for novice swimmers (both open in July and August). You can keep everyone looking spick and span thanks to the laundry service and the plentiful supply of hot water in the modern facilities block. Pick up supplies for your trip in the site’s grocery store. Alternatively, head for the terrace bar and restaurant (both open from Easter to the end of October), where breakfast, lunch and supper are served daily. And when you’re ready for sightseeing in León? From the campsite into the centre of the city, there is one daily bus which leaves the site in the morning.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked: It was close to Leon.

Disliked: The access to the site was poor and not well signed. The site has been poorly maintained and needs some work. Despite previous reviews saying the pool was open it was shut in early September and didn't look like it has been used for a while. We were booked in for 4 nights and left after 2. The food was OK but chips with everything. Sites were small and tight for trees. Don't use the cycle routes they are treacherous and rocky. We had electric bikes and got to Leon but struggled to get back. The toilets although usable were in need of maintenance with 2 of the 4 toilets seats broken.

Power optional grass and earth tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Power optional grass and earth tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked: Friendly, nice pool, nice pitched for small tents. Facilities fine and clean.

Disliked: Bit too far from city for easy access without transport (ok by bike but access tracks are in poor condition in places - not campsite's fault). Very noisy group disturbed other campers late at night and weren't asked to be quite by management. Lot of stray cats around - fed by staff.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked: none

Disliked: We checked in and staff brought us to the area. After 10 Minutes of our stay we were surrounded by flies and mosquitoes. Other cars nearby had the same problem. We decided to leave and checked into a hotel. Staff spoke very little english, pool was closed (not even filled with water), place was in the middle of nowhere. Nearby houses were all deserted. I would not recommend this place. Waste of money.

Power optional grass and earth tent, caravan or trailer tent site

Liked: Very accommodating hosts who spoke next to no English. We managed in Spanglish. They offered a guidebook to León (in English), a map with info on where to park for free and how to navigate the labyrinthine road system to get to the supermarket. Very clean toilets with plenty of paper, very clean showers and sinks. Hot water at one wash up and one laundry sink, plenty. Well shaded pitches, sandy. Good short order cook providing "Platos combinados" at 21:00 (burgers, chicken, ham, cured sausage, egg and chips with salad and bread for around 10 Euros). Good coffee with milk at 08:00. Children's menu, high chair, games and books. Watched the Euro football match with fellow campers and site owner (chef too) even tho' it finished after 23:00. Bread available in the morning.

Disliked: Site access is down a steep lane deeply rooted, perhaps affected by the very wet spring(2024). It was accessible for vans and caravans. The site is in a developing area of León's outskirts, adjacent to a new housing development, with views over farmland to the Picos. (So you can hear owls and many bird species in the dawn chorus. But, it is also adjacent to a dog's home and the dogs did howl at night. We had no problem with the site owner's noisy dog and the site is dog friendly. The swimming pool was empty and we saw it being hosed clean. There are outdoor chairs and tables campers may use. The site may benefit from new fittings (clothes hooks, perhaps new toilet seats) and from a more robust approach to keeping the outdoor furniture and multigames pitch tidy. Our pitch had a pile of cigarette butts by the water point. There isn't much in walking distance, bikes fine, so we didn't experience tapas in the Barriós of León..

Local attractions

So… where to start in León? Head for the ancient Barrio Húmedo old town for a peek at the jewel-like stained glass in the soaring Gothic Catedral de León, and the Romanesque-era Basílica de San Isidoro, adorned with bright frescoes and an ornate, gilded altar. Admire Antoni Gaudí’s impressive Casa Botines and its colonnaded cloisters, and call in at museums of history and contemporary art. After all that culture, retire to a bar and recharge your energy levels with a selection of regional tapas and a glass of something chilled. When out and about discovering Castile y León, look out for the cliffside caves at Yacimiento Arqueológico de Las Cuevas Menudas, or stroll around the photogenic ruins of San Pedro de Eslonza Monastery (both 20 minutes' drive). If you’d rather explore on foot, you can glimpse views of the León skyline from Cuestas de Las Lomas Park (10 minutes’ walk), or scale hills and follow waymarked trails through dense forest along Las Cadenas hiking trail (20 minutes).
