  • Spacious park next to Isla Christina salt marshes on Andalucia's coast
  • Columbus heritage city Huelva and Doñana National Park within 50 mins
  • Bird viewing platform on site; bike trail to marshes, town and beach
Columbus set sail not far away from Camper Park Playas de Luz, over 500 years ago... and when you’ve seen this treasure of site on Spain’s Andalusian coastline, you’ll wonder why he left. Playas de Luz is a spacious and well-tended park, a couple of minutes’ drive from shops, bars and eateries in the village of Pozo del Camino and 10 minutes from the beach. Facilities include a shop with cold drinks and basic supplies, as well as a microwave and coffee maker, and daily fresh bread and croissants. Gather and share your treats on the sunny terrace or make for the shaded picnic tables, where there are loungers for sunbathing and an invigorating outdoor shower. Or head over to the viewing platform, right on the edge of the Isla Christina marshes, to watch spoonbills, herons and pink flamingos coming and going all day. Hire bikes from the site and take the path through the marshes, down to the town and beach, where you’ll find long stretches of sand for walks and sunbathing and inviting waters for swims and kitesurfing. In town you can take tours of the fish market, watch the auctions and visit the local museum to see the fishing trade of today and yesteryear, as well as stuff yourself silly on just-caught produce in the many restaurants.

Local attractions

Isla Christina's marshes are an offshoot of the Doñana National Park, whose diverse terrain of lagoons, dunes and saltpans is home to Iberian lynxes, avocets and pink flamingos. The park proper starts at Mazagón, 50 minutes away, and you can sail, horse ride and hike your way through various bits. Mazagón is also a top spot for dolphin-spotting boat cruises . Huelva (40 minutes) is where Columbus did his prep work and the port city remembers him in various spots: visit the Santa Clara monastery where Columbus got the nod from King Ferdinand, tour the house of the Pinzón brothers who signed up to join Chris on his adventures, and nose round three replica ships from the 1492 expedition. Inland, it’s worth the one-hour trip to El Rocío, an elegant Andalusian town where a multi-spired church and sandy streets give the place a Mexican feel. That ramps up once yearly when pilgrims charge over here on horseback to pay respects with an all-night vigil to Our Lady of El Rocío. For more worldly pleasures, try Portugal: it’s 15 minutes to Ayamonte for a pleasant ferry trip of similar duration over the Guadiana River. If driving, half an hour will take you to Tavira, an old Moorish town with a fine castle, a little ferry to the town beach and a saltpan full of vigorous and flapping wading birds.
