  • Spacious park near the Wild West-style town of El Rocío
  • A short drive to the UNESCO-listed Doñana National Park
  • Roomy pool surrounded by a grassy terrace and straw parasols
Ever fancied staying in a Wild West-style town? Camping La Aldea is your spot, as it's on the edge of El Rocío, a bygone settlement looking somewhat like a spaghetti Western film set. Set on the edge of the lagoons and marshes of Doñana National Park, El Rocío town has dusty streets and minimal signage, and you’re more likely to come nose to nose with a horse than you are another car as the locals’ main mode of transport is horse-drawn carriages. Outside most of the buildings are horse-hitching rails for people to park up their horses: it’s even easier to park an equine animal than a car here. Back at base, cool off at the fab and roomy pool, or lounge around the spacious and lush surrounding garden under the sun or a parasol. There's a playground, pétanque court and multisports pitch to get active at, all before feeding time at the restaurant via locally sourced produce and fresh fish. If you’re a horsey sort or tend to pine for your pooch while away, then you can bring either animal along here: a stable is on site, and your amenable hosts are especially fond of friendly dogs, so much so that they allow well-behaved ones absolutely gratis.

Local attractions

Around El Rocío town, look out for the signs saying 'Reservado Caballos' (reserved for horses) – particularly handy if you’re on horseback and fancy stopping off at the taverna for a tipple. If you’re not saddling up, then take yourself for a wander on your own two feet: to the rear of the town you can watch all the action at the equestrian training ring and stables. The pristine sandy beaches, coastal forests and little fishing villages of the Costa de la Luz are 20 minutes' drive away for seaside days. Europe’s largest nature reserve – the UNESCO-listed Doñana National Park – is a short drive away from base too, and around the marshes and sand dunes of Las Marismas delta are thousands of European and African migratory birds as well as deer, wild boar, badgers and Egyptian mongooses. The Costa de la Luz is also famed for its Columbus Route: head to Huelva for a tour around Moguer, Palos de la Frontera, where Columbus and his crew sailed off to discover the Americas.
