It's free, quick and easy!
- Spacious private pitches on the edge of the Klein Swartberg Mountains
- Handy stopover on Route 323 between the N1 and Route 62
- Bar, outdoor swimming pool and camping kit rentals
Cross-country travels taking in the N1 or famed Route 62, or simply seeking a weekend break from the city? Either way, park up at Porcupine Rest Camp for plenty of peace and private space.
A handy location just off Route 323 (the road that links the two aforementioned major routes), half an hour from Laingsburg, means that this is a mighty convenient stopover spot for folk on a road trip. A chilled-out rural setting, just outside the teeny hamlet of Vleiland, means that it's also fab for a countryside escape.
If you’re after relaxed rural pursuits, take a stroll on the farm's trails, meander around picking figs and olives or grab your binoculars for a bit of birdwatching. More active sorts can take their mountain bikes out onto local gravel trails or clamber about in the Klein Swartberg Mountains before heading back for a dip in the swimming pool.
However you seek to fill your days, back at base you'll have a properly private pitch in a secluded spot with plenty of trees for shade. No scrapping for facilities here – each pitch has its own shower, flush toilet, braai area and tap. Your space is yours to play with as you wish: it’s totally up to you whether you bring along a pile of pals or keep the whole thing for yourself. For social times, you can always head over to the Overlander bar for a game of pool, a pizza and a cold beer while the great gods of rock play out of the sound system.
Travelling light/forgotten something vital? The team here have kit to rent including tables and chairs, camping mattresses, lights and cooking utensils.

Local attractions
Much of the attraction of this area is its open space, so come set for days of hiking, biking and fishing (which you can do in the river just by the camp). You’ll be surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Kleine Swartberg Mountains, and the Towerkop Nature Reserve is 25 minutes’ drive away.
Anyone who fancies seeing the view while riding a horse or taking a four wheel drive tour might like to make the hour-long journey to Anysberg Nature Reserve. If you’re more interested in finding top tipples, there are several cellars to select local wines from in Calitzdorp, also an hour away by car.
Venture little further along Route 62 (around an hour and a half from the site) to get to Oudtshoorn, aka the ‘ostrich capital of the world’. Farms here offer the chance to meet the big birds and then pick up tasty meat products to take back for the braai. If you're veggie, perhaps swerve instead to one of the town's olive-growing estates.
